This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of the "father of
computer science," Alan Turing. His legacy is recognized with the Turing
Award, the "Nobel prize" of computer science. The Department of Computer 
Science at UVic and PIMS are honoured to host 2010 Turing Award winner 
Leslie Valiant, who has made fundamental contributions to our understanding
of computation, communication and learning. His other achievements include
the Nevanlinna Prize (1986) and the Knuth Prize (1997), Fellow of the 
Royal Society and member of the US National Academy of Sciences.
