The Inaugural Fields Medal Symposium Public Opening

Monday, October 15, 2012
7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Isabel Bader Theatre, 93 Charles Street West, Toronto

The inaugural Fields Medal Symposium will be hosted by the Fields Institute
in Toronto, October 15-18, 2012. The inaugural Symposium is entitled
"Fundamentals of the Langlands program" and honours 2010 Fields Medallist
Ngo Bao Chau.

Each year, the Symposium will celebrate the work of one of the recent Fields
Medallists. The goals of the Symposium are to bring together brilliant
researchers to help take the area to new frontiers, to raise public
awareness of Mathematics and the Fields Medal, and to inspire the next
generation.

Program of the Public Opening:

Opening Remarks by Ingrid Daubechies, President of the International
Mathematical Union, His Excellency Le Sy Vuong Ha, Ambassador of Vietnam to
Canada, and the Honourable Glen Murray, Minister of Training, Colleges, and
Universities, Government of Ontario.

Two public lectures by James Arthur, University of Toronto, on The Langlands
Program: Number Theory, Geometry, and the Fundamental Lemma, and by Ngo Bao
Chau, University of Chicago, on the Fundamental Lemma.

Admission to the Public Opening is free, but advance tickets are required.
