James O. Ramsay, Emeritus Professor at McGill University, has been 
awarded Honorary Membership in the Statistical Society of Canada (SSC). 
This distinction, which was announced this morning at the Annual Meeting 
of the Society in Guelph, ON, recognizes Professor Ramsay's exceptional 
contributions to the development of statistical sciences in Canada.

Professor Ramsay has had a long and distinguished career as a 
researcher. He is internationally acclaimed as the founder of Functional 
Data Analysis. He has contributed widely to the development of the field 
and to its dissemination through numerous publications and software 
libraries. His bestselling books with Bernard Silverman, entitled 
Functional Data Analysis (1997, 2005) and Applied Functional Data 
Analysis (2002) are highly influential; the monograph Functional Data 
Analysis in Matlab and R (2009), co-authored by Giles Hooker and Spencer 
Graves, has enjoyed the same runaway success. Professor Ramsay has also 
made highly influential contributions to multidimensional scaling and 
nonparametric statistics, in addition to solving a range of problems in 
psychometrics and much more.

In recognition of his work, Professor Ramsay was awarded the 1998 Gold 
Medal of the SSC. Together with Nancy Heckman, he was also the recipient 
of The Canadian Journal of Statistics Best Paper Award in 2000. Members 
of the SSC have often had a chance to hear him speak at their annual 
meetings, and they have appreciated his involvement in the Society in 
various capacities, most notably as President (2002--3). Professor 
Ramsay is a Fellow of the Canadian Psychological Association. He also 
served, among many leadership roles, as President of the Psychometric 
Society (1981--2), and as Chair of his academic department (1986--9).

James O. Ramsay, professeur émérite à l'Université McGill, s'est vu 
décerner le titre de membre honoraire de la Société statistique du 
Canada (SSC). La distinction, annoncée ce matin dans le cadre du congrès 
annuel de la Société à Guelph (ON), salue les contributions 
exceptionnelles du professeur Ramsay au développement des sciences 
statistiques au Canada.

Professeur Ramsay a mené une carrière longue et brillante en recherche. 
Il est universellement reconnu comme le fondateur de l'analyse des 
données fonctionnelles. Il a largement contribué au développement du 
domaine et à sa diffusion par ses nombreuses publications et 
l'élaboration de logithèques. Les ouvrages qu'il a rédigés avec Bernard 
Silverman, intitulés Functional Data Analysis (1997, 2005) et Applied 
Functional Data Analysis (2002) sont des best-sellers très influents ; 
la monographie Functional Data Analysis in Matlab and R (2009), cosignée 
par Giles Hooker et Spencer Graves, a aussi connu un succès monstre. 
Professeur Ramsay a également contribué de façon très importante à la 
théorie de l'échelonnage multivarié et à la statistique non 
paramétrique, en plus d'avoir résolu diverses problématiques en 
psychométrie et plus encore.

En reconnaissance de ses travaux, Professeur Ramsay s'est vu attribuer 
la médaille d'or de la SSC en 1998. Avec Nancy Heckman, il a également 
reçu le prix du meilleur article de La revue canadienne de statistique 
en 2000. Les membres de la SSC ont souvent eu l'occasion de l'entendre 
lors de leur congrès annuel et lui sont reconnaissants pour son 
engagement envers la Société à divers titres, notamment en tant que 
président (2002--3). Compagnon de la Société canadienne de psychologie, 
Jim a aussi été président de la Société de psychométrie (1981--2) et 
directeur de son département (1986--9), entre autres.
