The Statistical Society of Canada (SSC) announced today that the 
recipient of its 2012 Gold Medal is Professor Robert John Tibshirani of 
Stanford University. The Gold Medal is the Society’s highest 
distinction; it is awarded each year to a Canadian statistician for 
exceptional contributions to the field.

Professor Tibshirani’s contributions in the statistical sciences place 
him in the uppermost echelon of researchers worldwide. He gained 
international recognition for his contributions to theory and 
methodology for the analysis of complex datasets, smoothing and 
regression methodology, the bootstrap, statistical learning and 
classification, and to application areas that include public health, 
medicine, genomics, proteomics and traffic safety. Some of his 
best-known contributions are the Lasso, which uses absolute value 
penalization in regression and related problems, Generalized Additive 
Modeling (GAM), and Significance Analysis of Microarrays (SAM).  He has 
co-authored three widely used books: Generalized Additive Models, An 
Introduction to the Bootstrap, and The Elements of Statistical Learning, 
which now in its second edition. These books are very widely used not 
only in statistics but also in other fields, and their material is 
taught in graduate schools around the world.

His exceptional contributions in research have been recognized through 
various awards and honours.  He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of 
Canada, the American Statistical Association, and the Institute of 
Mathematical Statistics (IMS). Professor Tibshirani won the 
international COPSS (Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies) 
Award in 1996, the NSERC Steacie Award in 1997, the CRM-SSC Prize in 
Statistics in 2000, the University of Waterloo Distinguished Alumni 
Achievement Award in 2006, and was an IMS Medallion Lecturer. In 2012, 
he was elected to be a member of the US National Academy of Sciences.

Professor Tibshirani received his award at the University of Guelph, ON, 
where over 500 statisticians are gathered for the Society’s 40th Annual 
Meeting.

Robert John Tibshirani, professeur à l’Université Stanford a été annoncé 
aujourd’hui comme le gagnant de la médaille d’or 2012 de la Société 
statistique du Canada (SSC). La médaille d’or est la plus haute 
distinction décernée par la Société ; elle est remise chaque année à un 
statisticien canadien qui s’est démarqué par ses contributions 
exceptionnelles au domaine.

Les contributions du Professeur Tibshirani aux sciences statistiques en 
font l’un des chercheurs les plus éminemment respectés au monde. Il a 
contribué de manière exceptionnelle à la théorie et à la méthodologie de 
l’analyse des ensembles de données complexes, à la méthodologie du 
lissage et de la régression, à la méthodologie du bootstrap, à 
l’apprentissage et à la classification statistiques, ainsi qu’à divers 
domaines d’application tels que la santé publique, la médecine, la 
génomique, la protéomique, et la sécurité routière. Ses contributions 
les plus connues incluent le lasso, qui utilise la pénalisation des 
valeurs absolues en régression et dans les problèmes connexes, les 
modèles additifs généralisés (GAM) et l’analyse de significativité des 
micro-puces Significance Analysis of Microarrays (SAM). Il est 
corédacteur de trois ouvrages très répandus : Generalized Additive 
Models, An Introduction to the Bootstrap et The Elements of Statistical 
Learning (récemment réédité). Ces manuels sont utilisés dans le monde 
entier pour l’enseignement spécialisé en statistique et dans plusieurs 
autres disciplines.

Les contributions exceptionnelles du Professeur Tibshirani à la 
recherche lui ont valu divers prix et honneurs. Il est compagnon de la 
Société royale du Canada, compagnon de l’Association des statisticiens 
américains et compagnon de l’Institut de statistique mathématique (IMS). 
Il s’est vu décerner le prix international du comité COPSS (Committee of 
Presidents of Statistical Societies) en 1996, le prix Steacie du CRSNG 
en 1997, et le prix CRM-SSC en statistique en 2000.  En 2006, il a reçu 
le prix Distinguished Alumni Acheivement de l’Université de Waterloo et 
a servi comme IMS Medallion Lecturer.  En 2012, le Professeur Tibshirani 
a été élu membre de l’Académie nationale des sciences américaines.

La médaille d’or lui a été décernée dans le cadre du 40e congrès annuel 
de la Société à Guelph (ON), où plus de 500 statisticiens sont réunis.
