The Statistical Society of Canada (SSC) announced today that the 
recipient of its 2012 Distinguished Service Award is Román 
Viveros-Aguilera, Professor in the Department of Mathematics and 
Statistics at McMaster University. The announcement was made at the 
Society’s Annual Meeting in Guelph, ON.  This distinction is awarded to 
an SSC member who has made substantial contributions to the running or 
welfare of SSC, over a period of several years.

Professor Viveros-Aguilera attended his first SSC conference, the 1984 
Annual Meeting at the University of Guelph, when he was a graduate 
student. He has been a regular member since 1990. Over the intervening 
years, Professor Viveros-Aguilera has served on a variety of SSC 
committees, chairing many of them, including Elections, Membership, 
Awards, Pierre Robillard Award, Education, Statistics Chairs, 
Publications, Program, and an Ad-hoc Committee on Priorities. He has 
also served as SSC Local Representative at McMaster and to the Canadian 
Mathematical Society. For the 1996 Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM) held 
in Chicago, Illinois, Professor Viveros-Aguilera   represented the SSC 
on the Program Organizing Committee. He was elected to represent Ontario 
on the Board of Directors of the Society for two consecutive terms. 
Currently he represents the SSC on the COPSS Awards Committee.

A number of other roles and duties have occupied his time in the SSC. In 
2000, he co-founded (with Bovas Abraham, University of Waterloo) the 
Business and Industrial Statistics Section of the SSC, and served as its 
founding Secretary for four years. He later served as the Section’s 
President. Professor Viveros-Aguilera also served as Editor of Liaison, 
the newsletter of the Society, for the period 2000-4, and as Co-Editor 
(with Angelo Canty, McMaster University) during June-December 2007. He 
has been an Associate Editor of Liaison since 2008. Jointly with Angelo 
Canty, he negotiated the agreement with Wiley for the publication of The 
Canadian Journal of Statistics.

Professor Viveros-Aguilera was the organizer for the Canadian side of 
the 1st Canada-Mexico Statistics Meeting held at the Center for Research 
in Mathematics, Guanajuato, Mexico, in February 2008. In 2007, he was 
elected President of the SSC, serving as President-Elect (2007-2008), 
President (2008-2009) and Past-President (2009-2010).

Teaching statistics and mentoring graduate students have received high 
priority in his career. He is an enthusiastic teacher of statistics, and 
received the McMaster Student Union Teaching Award for Arts & Science in 
2005.

La Société statistique du Canada a annoncé aujourd’hui qu’elle avait 
décerné son Prix pour services insignes 2012 à Román Viveros-Aguilera, 
professeur des mathématiques et statistique à l’Université McMaster. 
L’annonce a été faite dans le cadre du congrès annuel de la Société, qui 
se tient à Guelph (ON). Cette distinction est décernée à un membre de la 
SSC qui a contribué de façon substantielle et pendant plusieurs années 
au fonctionnement ou à l’essor de la SSC.

C’est à l’Université de Guelph, en 1984, que le professeur 
Viveros-Aguilera a participé à son premier congrès de la SSC à titre 
d’étudiant. Il est membre régulier de la Société depuis 1990. Au fil des 
ans, il a été membre (et souvent même président) de nombreux comités de 
la SSC, dont les comités des élections, du recrutement, des prix, du 
prix Pierre-Robillard, d’éducation, des directeurs de départements de 
statistique, des publications, des congrès et d’un comité ad hoc sur les 
priorités. Il a aussi été le représentant local de la SSC à McMaster et 
de la Société mathématique du Canada. Lors des JSM de 1996 à Chicago, le 
professeur Viveros-Aguilera a représenté la SSC au sein du Comité 
scientifique. Il a aussi siégé au Conseil d’administration de la Société 
pendant quatre ans à titre de représentant régional de l’Ontario. Encore 
aujourd’hui, il représente la SSC au Comité des prix COPSS.

Bien d’autres rôles et responsabilités ont occupé le professeur 
Viveros-Aguilera à la SSC. En 2000, il s’est associé à Bovas Abraham de 
l’Université de Waterloo pour fonder le Groupe de statistique 
industrielle et de gestion de la SSC, dont il a été le secrétaire 
fondateur pendant quatre ans, et plus tard le président. De 2000 à 2004, 
le professeur Viveros-Aguilera était rédacteur en chef de Liaison, le 
magazine de la Société, puis corédacteur en chef (avec Angelo Canty de 
McMaster) de juin à décembre 2007. Il continue depuis lors de faire 
partie du Comité de rédaction. Avec Angelo Canty, le professeur 
Viveros-Aguilera a négocié avec Wiley l’accord relatif à la publication 
de La revue canadienne de statistique. Il a été l’organisateur canadien 
du 1er congrès de statistique Canada-Mexique, qui s’est tenu au Centre 
de recherche en mathématiques de Guanajuato, au Mexique, en février 
2008. En 2007, le professeur Viveros-Aguilera a été élu président de la 
SSC, servant tour à tour à titre de président désigné (2007-2008), de 
président (2008-2009) et de président sortant (2009-2010).

L’enseignement et le mentorat comptent parmi ses priorités 
professionnelles. Ses qualités pédagogiques et son enthousiasme lui ont 
valu en 2005 un prix d’enseignement de l’Association des étudiants en 
arts et sciences de l’Université McMaster.
