*_Call for nominations: Mitacs Innovation Lecture_*

We invite nominations for the first ever Mitacs Innovation Lecturer, to 
give a public lecture in the 2020 Winter Meeting of the Canadian 
Mathematical Society. The goal of the lecture is to illuminate the 
mathematical underpinnings of significant innovative developments that 
are impacting our world and the way we relate to it. The speaker will be 
required to be both an excellent mathematician and an adept communicator.

*_Nomination procedure:_*Please send a short nomination statement 
indicating how the nominee would meet the goals of the Mitacs Innovation 
Lecture, plus a CV for the nominee (if available) to Zishad Lak, CMS 
Fundraising and Communications Officer (zlak at cms.math.ca 
<mailto:zlak at cms.math.ca>).All nominations will be forwarded to the 
Mitacs Innovation Lecture Committee for evaluation and a final decision 
(see details below).

*_Nomination deadline: January 6, 2020_*

*Context*: mathematics is a powerful force impacting our society in many 
ways. Too often the power of mathematics to effect change in business, 
communication, humanities, industry, science and technology is hidden 
from view. The purpose of the /Mitacs Innovation Lecture/ is to 
illuminate the mathematical underpinnings of significant innovative 
developments that are impacting our world and the way we relate to it. 
This lecture is meant to be very broad, of interest to the general 
public as well as to mathematical scientists. Its name will celebrate 
the significant impact that Mitacs (a national organization established 
by Canada’s mathematicians) has had on innovation across the country 
since 1999.

*Details:*the /Mitacs Innovation Lecture/ will be held once a year, at 
the winter meeting of the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS). 
Nominations for the speaker will be requested from the broader 
mathematical community. The CMS has appointed a standing /Mitacs 
Innovation Lecture Committee/ to select the annual speaker (Chair: Nancy 
Reid, Toronto). The members of the committee are internationally 
recognized mathematical scientists with a broad view on the impact of 
mathematics.

*_Appel de mise en candidature : Conférence sur l’innovation de Mitacs_*

La CMS lance un appel de mise en candidature pour la Conférence sur 
l’innovation de Mitacs. La candidate ou le candidat selectionné.e 
présentera une conférence publique lors de la Réunion d’hiver 2020 de la 
SMC. L’objectif de cette série de conférences est d’illuminer les 
fondements mathématiques de développements innovateurs importants qui 
ont un impact dans notre monde et les façons dont nous interagissons 
avec eux.

*_Procédure de mise en candidature _*: Veuillez envoyer une proposition 
de nomination indiquant les raisons pour lesquelles la candidate ou le 
candidat répond aux objectifs de la Conférence sur l’innovation de 
Mitacs et, si possible, le curriculum vitae de la candidate ou du 
candidat à Zishad Lak, l’agente de collecte de fonds et des 
communications de la SMC (zlak at smc.math.ca <mailto:zlak at smc.math.ca>). 
Toutes les candidatures seront envoyées au comité de la Conférence sur 
l’innovation de Mitacs pour évaluation (voir les détails ci-dessous).

*Contexte : *les mathématiques constituent une force puissante dans 
notre société pour plusieurs raisons. On oublie souvent les impacts des 
mathématiques sur les transformations dans le monde d’affaires, en 
communications, en sciences humaines, en industries et en sciences et 
technologies. L’objectif de la /Conférence sur l’innovation de Mitacs/ 
est d’illuminer les fondements mathématiques de développements 
innovateurs importants qui ont un impact dans notre monde et les façons 
dont nous interagissons avec eux. Cette conférence doit porter sur un 
thème général qui intéresse tant le public général que les 
mathématicien.ne.s. Le nom de cette conférence reconnaît et célèbre 
l’effet important que Mitacs, un organisme national établi par les 
mathématiciens du Canada, a eu sur l’innovation à travers le pays depuis 
1999.

*Détails : *La /Conférence sur l’innovation de Mitacs/ aura lieu une 
fois l’an lors de la Réunion d’hiver de la Société mathématique du 
Canada (SMC). La communauté mathématique est invitée à proposer les 
candidats et candidates. La SMC a désigné un comité permanent, le 
/Comité de lecture sur l’innovation de Mitacs/ pour sélectionner les 
conférenciers et conférencières annuel.le.s (Présidente : Nancy Reid, 
Toronto). Les membres du comité sont les mathématicien.ne.s de renommé 
international avec une vision large de l’impact des mathématiques.
