*Professor Bovas Abraham*, Professor at University of Waterloo, Waterloo 
has been awarded Honorary Membership in the Statistical Society of 
Canada. Professor Abraham received his award at University of Alberta, 
Edmonton, where more than 500 statisticians are gathered for the 
Society’s 41’st Annual Meeting. This award is intended to honour an 
individual who has made exceptional contributions to the development of 
the statistical sciences in Canada and whose work has had a major impact 
in this country.

Bovas Abraham is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Statistics and 
Actuarial Science at the University of Waterloo. He was born in June 
1942 in Kerala, South India, where he attended school in the village of 
Kariamplave, Ranni, where his parents still reside. He attended the 
University of Kerala when this state installed the world’s first elected 
communist government. He has two brothers and a sister, and two 
wonderful daughters, Linzy and Linn and boasts that his wife, Annamma, 
is an exquisite cook and a creative quilter.

After graduation, he taught in a college in Kerala and refined his 
teaching skills in Cape Coast, Ghana, preparing students for the A-Level 
examinations of the University of London. By coincidence, while he was 
in Ghana, a coup overthrowing the government of Nkrumah occurred. Bovas 
continues to deny any involvement. A happier coup occurred in the same 
period when he married Annamma in 1967 while on vacation in Kerala.

Bovas obtained his MSc from the University of Guelph in 1971 and his PhD 
in 1975 from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, under the supervision 
of George Box. After spending two years at Dalhousie University he moved 
to Waterloo. He has been a faculty member at the University of Waterloo 
in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science since 1977.

Professor Abraham has devoted his considerable talent and energy to the 
statistical sciences in many different capacities. He is a former 
President of the SSC and the founding president of the Business and 
Industrial Statistics Section of the SSC as well as the founding 
president of the International Society for Business and Industrial 
Statistics. He was the Director of the Institute for Improvement in 
Quality and Productivity at the University of Waterloo for nearly ten 
years. He has been involved in graduate training, teaching courses and 
supervising Masters and PhD students since 1977. He has published 
extensively in time series analysis, quality improvement, and the 
management and implementation of statistical procedures such as designed 
experiments, SPC and is co-author of the popular books, Statistical 
Methods for Forecasting, and Introduction to Regression Modeling. He has 
also acted as an educator and consultant in a wide range of statistical 
applications in industry in Canada, Latin America, India, and the United 
States.

Bovas is also a recipient of many other awards. He is a Fellow of the 
American Society for Quality, a Fellow of the American Statistical 
Association, a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society, an Elected 
Member of the International Statistical Institute. In addition, he holds 
the Service Award from the International Statistical Institute (2007) 
and the William G. Hunter award from the Statistics Division of the 
American Society for Quality (2006).

The citation for the award reads:
“To Bovas Abraham, for his fundamental contributions to the statistical 
sciences, advances in time series analysis, statistical methods for 
quality improvement, and industrial statistics, for dissemination of 
statistical methodology through authorship of textbooks, and for his 
service as founding president of the Business and Industrial Statistics 
Section and President of the Statistical Society of Canada.”

*Bovas Abraham*, professeur à la University of Waterloo, Waterloo s’est 
vu décerner le titre de membre honoraire de la Société statistique du 
Canada. Le professeur Field a reçu son prix à l’Université Alberta 
(Edmonton, AB), où plus de 500 statisticiens participent au 41e congrès 
annuel de la Société. Ce titre vise à honorer un individu qui a 
contribué de manière exceptionnelle au développement des sciences 
statistiques au Canada et dont les travaux ont eu un impact majeur au pays.

Bovas Abraham est professeur émérite au Département de statistique et 
d’actuariat de la University of Waterloo. Il est né en juin 1942 dans le 
Kerala, dans la partie sud de l’Inde ; il a entamé ses études dans le 
village de Kariamplave, Ranni, où vivent encore ses parents. Il a 
fréquenté la University of Kerala à l’époque où cet État a installé le 
premier gouvernement communiste élu au monde. Il a deux frères et une 
soeur, deux merveilleuses filles, Linzy et Linn, et il vante les talents 
créatifs de cuisinière et de courtepointe de son épouse Annamma.

Après avoir obtenu un premier diplôme, il a enseigné dans un collège au 
Kerala et perfectionné ses qualités d’enseignant à Cape Coast, au Ghana, 
dans un établissement de préparation aux examens d’entrée de la 
University of London. Le hasard a voulu qu’il se trouve au Ghana lors du 
coup d’État qui a renversé le gouvernement de Nkrumah. Bovas continue de 
nier toute implication personnelle. Un plus joli coup s’est produit à 
cette même époque lorsqu’il a épousé Annamma, en 1967, lors de vacances 
au Kerala.

Bovas a obtenu sa maîtrise de la University of Guelph (en 1971) et son 
doctorat (en 1975) de la University of Wisconsin à Madison sous la 
direction de George Box. Après avoir enseigné deux ans à Dalhousie, il a 
déménagé à Waterloo. Il y est professeur depuis 1977.

Le professeur Abraham a consacré son énorme talent et ses énergies aux 
sciences statistiques de multiples façons. Il a été président de la SSC 
et le président fondateur du Groupe de statistique industrielle et de 
gestion de la SSC, ainsi que de la Société internationale de statistique 
industrielle et de gestion. Il a dirigé l’Institut d’amélioration de la 
qualité et de la productivité de la University of Waterloo pendant près 
de dix ans. Il participe à la formation d’étudiants de cycle supérieur, 
à l’enseignement et à l’encadrement d’étudiants à la maîtrise et au 
doctorat depuis 1977. Il a publié de nombreux articles en analyse de 
séries chronologiques, en amélioration de la qualité et en gestion, 
ainsi que sur la mise en oeuvre de procédures statistiques telles la 
conception d’expériences et le contrôle statistique des procédés ; il 
est le coauteur des ouvrages populaires Statistical Methods for 
Forecasting et Introduction to Regression Modeling. Il a également 
oeuvré en tant qu’éducateur et consultant dans le cadre de diverses 
applications industrielles de la statistique au Canada, en Amérique 
latine, en Inde et aux États-Unis.

Bovas est le récipiendaire de nombreuses autres distinctions. Il est 
notamment compagnon de la Société américaine pour la qualité, compagnon 
de l’Association des statisticiens américains, fellow de la Royal 
Statistical Society, et membre élu de l’Institut international de 
statistique. Il s’est également vu décerner le Prix pour services de 
l’Institut international de statistique (2007) et le Prix William G. 
Hunter de la Division de statistique de la Société américaine pour la 
qualité (2006).

La citation du titre de membre honoraire se lit comme suit :
« À Bovas Abraham, en reconnaissance de ses contributions fondamentales 
en statistique qui ont permis des avancées dans le domaine des séries 
chronologiques, des méthodes statistiques d’amélioration de la qualité 
et de la statistique industrielle, de la diffusion de méthodologie 
statistique en tant qu’auteur de livres et de ses mandats à titre de 
Président fondateur du Groupe de statistique industrielle et de gestion 
et de Président de la Société statistique du Canada. »
