The 2012 PIMS Hugh Morris Lecture

Henri Darmon, McGill University, will deliver a talk entitled, "Numbers and Shapes." The lecture will take place on November 1, 2012 at the University of Calgary.

Henri Darmon specializes in number theory, working on Hilbert's 12th problem and its relation with the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture. He is currently a James McGill Professor of Mathematics at McGill University. He was elected to the Royal Society of Canada in 2003 and in 2008, awarded the Royal Society of Canada's John L. Synge Award.

The Hugh Morris Lecture Series has been generously endowed by Dr. Hugh Morris, former Chair of the PIMS Board of Directors, and long-time friend of the mathematical sciences. The Series attracts the world's top mathematical scientists, who deliver presentations on current research topics to PIMS sites in Western Canada and Washington State.

Dr. Morris served on the PIMS Board for over ten years. He has more than 40 years of experience in the mineral industry, including a term as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Imperial Metals, and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Dr. Morris has demonstrated special interest in national and international scientific and professional associations and has been a member of NSERC's Council and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Lithoprobe Project.
