At its Annual Meeting held in Wolfville, NS, the Statistical Society of 
Canada announced today that Dr. Francis Zwiers is the 2011 recipient of 
the Award for Impact of Applied and Collaborative Work. The award 
recognizes outstanding contributions by SSC members in collaborative 
research and applied work, the importance of which derives primarily 
from its relatively recent impact on a subject area outside of the 
statistical sciences, on an area of application, or on an organization.

For over 25 years, Dr. Zwiers occupied several important research and 
administrative positions with the Climate Research Division at 
Environment Canada. Since 2010, Zwiers is Professor and Director of the 
Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium at University of Victoria.

Francis Zwiers is acknowledged internationally as a world leader in the 
use of innovative statistical techniques for investigating a variety of 
challenging problems in climate change: the detection and attribution of 
change in the climate system, the analysis of temperature and 
precipitation extremes in present and future climates, climate 
predictability and variability, seasonal prediction, and the 
quantification of uncertainties associated with global climate models’ 
predictions.

An important element of his professional career is his effectiveness as 
a communicator of climate science and its application to societal 
changes. One of his many accomplishments has been to raise the profile 
and credibility of Canadian climate science at home and abroad as a 
result of his ability to communicate his science. His publications that 
combine climate science and statistics, in prestigious journals such as 
the Journal of Climate, Climate Dynamics, Nature and Science, are 
frequently cited to have altered the way climate science is approached. 
His approaches have been adopted in the scientific activities and 
organizations such as the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the 
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and the World Climate 
Research Program (WCRP).

Zwiers’ work has received numerous awards, including thePresident Prize 
from the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society, The 
Patterson Distinguished Service Medal from the Meteorological Service of 
Canada, the International Meetings on Statistical Climatology 
Achievement Award, and the WMO Award for Exceptionally Long Term Service 
to the Commission for Climatology. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society 
of Canada and the American Meteorological Society.

When asked about how he got interested in statistics, he swiftly 
responded: “It was Jack Robinson’s introductory 2nd year level stats 
course at University of Waterloo that did the trick.”

Francis Zwiers will deliver the SSC Impact Award Address at the 2012 
Annual Meeting of the Society to be held June 3-6 in Guelph, ON.

Lors de son congrès annuel à Wolfville (NS), la Société statistique du 
Canada a annoncé aujourd’hui que Francis Zwiers est le récipiendaire 
2011 de son prix pour l’impact du travail collaboratif et appliqué. Ce 
prix salue les contributions exceptionnelles de membres de la SSC à des 
travaux de recherche de nature appliquée réalisés en collaboration, dont 
l’importance découle principalement de son impact relativement récent 
sur un organisme ou dans un domaine du savoir autre que la statistique.

Pendant plus de 25 ans, Francis Zwiers a occupé plusieurs postes de 
recherche et administratifs importants au sein de la Direction de la 
recherche climatologique d’Environnement Canada. Depuis 2010, Zwiers est 
directeur et professeur au Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium à la 
University of Victoria.


Francis Zwiers est connu dans le monde entier comme chef de file de 
techniques statistiques novatrices permettant d’étudier divers problèmes 
épineux relatifs au changement climatique : détection et attribution du 
changement dans le système climatique, analyse des extrêmes de 
température et de précipitation dans le climat actuel et futur, 
prédictibilité et variabilité du climat, prévision saisonnière et 
quantification des incertitudes liées aux prévisions des modèles 
climatiques mondiaux.

Sa carrière a notamment été marquée par sa capacité à vulgariser la 
climatologie et ses applications aux changements sociétaux. L’un de ses 
grands succès a été de rehausser le profil et la crédibilité de la 
climatologie canadienne ici et à l’étranger par son habileté à 
communiquer sa science. Ses publications, qui combinent climatologie et 
statistique, ont paru dans des revues prestigieuses telles que le 
Journal of Climate, Climate Dynamics, Nature et Science, et on leur doit 
d’avoir changé la façon dont est abordée la climatologie. Ses approches 
ont été adoptées dans diverses activités et organisations scientifiques 
telles l’Organisation météorologique mondiale (OMM), le Groupe d’experts 
intergouvernemental sur l’évolution du climat (GIEC) et le Programme 
mondial de recherches sur le climat (PMRC).

Zwiers s’est vu décerner de nombreux prix pour ses travaux, dont le prix 
du Président de la Société canadienne de météorologie et 
d’océanographie, la médaille pour services insignes Patterson du Service 
météorologique du Canada, le prix de distinction de la Rencontre 
internationale sur la climatologie statistique et un prix de l’OMM pour 
services de long terme exceptionnels à la Commission de climatologie. Il 
est membre de la Société royale du Canada et de la American 
Meteorological Society.

Quand on lui demande comment il s’est intéressé à la statistique, il 
répond immédiatement : « C’est grâce au cours d’introduction de deuxième 
année donné par Jack Robinson à University of Waterloo. »

Francis Zwiers présentera l’allocution du prix pour impact de la SSC 
lors du congrès annuel 2012 de la Société, qui se tiendra du 3 au 6 juin 
à Guelph (ON).
