The Statistical Society of Canada announced today that the recipient of 
its 2011 Distinguished Service Award is David A. Binder, retired 
Director General of the Methodology Branch at Statistics Canada. The 
announcement was made at the Society’s Annual Meeting held in Wolfville, 
NS.  The distinction is awarded to an SSC member who has made 
substantial contributions to the running or welfare of SSC, over a 
period of several years.

David’s cumulative rich experience, his wide network of contacts, his 
farsightedness and ability to negotiate all have served the Society well 
over the years. He is a devoted member of the SSC who works hard either 
at the front lines, or in the background, to achieve the Society’s 
mission and to advance its influence beyond traditional boundaries.   
His statistical leadership and research contributions have been 
recognized with Elected Membership in the International Statistical 
Institute and Fellowship in the American Statistical Association.

As President in 2006, he was instrumental in enhancing the Society’s 
Accreditation Program.  He was passionate about engaging young 
statisticians in the functioning of the Society.  David also played a 
major role in the introduction of new awards, most notably the Award for 
Impact of Applied and Collaborative Work.

After serving on the Executive, David agreed to be the Society’s first 
Executive Director.  He was undaunted by difficult or challenging 
tasks.  He helped establish an efficient and effective operation for the 
SSC office and the SSC executive.

David first joined the SSC in the early 80’s.  He said, “I joined the 
SSC because at that time there were not enough non-academic 
statisticians in the Society who could influence its direction and 
goals”.   He found his work as a volunteer in the Society very 
rewarding.  “I was continuously energized in my work with the SSC 
because I got to work closely with so many highly motivated and 
competent professionals.”

La Société statistique du Canada a annoncé aujourd’hui qu’elle avait 
décerné son Prix pour services insignes 2011 à David A. Binder, 
directeur général (retraité) de la Direction de la méthodologie de 
Statistique Canada. L’annonce a été faite dans le cadre du congrès 
annuel de la Société, qui se tient à Wolfville (NS). Cette distinction 
est décernée à un membre de la SSC qui a contribué de façon 
substantielle et pendant plusieurs années au fonctionnement ou à l’essor 
de la SSC.

La vaste expérience de David, son large réseau de contacts, sa 
prévoyance et son talent pour la négociation ont bien servi la Société 
pendant toutes ces années. Il est un membre dévoué de la SSC qui sait 
travailler tout aussi bien à l’avant-scène qu’en coulisses pour réaliser 
la mission de la Société et étendre son influence au-delà de ses 
frontières traditionnelles. Son leadership et ses contributions ont été 
récompensés par son élection à l’Institut international de statistique 
et à la American Statistical Association.

Pendant sa présidence en 2006, il a joué un rôle clé pour améliorer le 
programme d’accréditation de la Société. Il a œuvré passionnément pour 
faire participer les jeunes statisticiens au bon fonctionnement de la 
SSC. David a également joué un rôle crucial dans l’introduction de 
nouveaux prix, notamment le prix pour l’impact du travail appliqué et en 
collaboration.

Après avoir siégé à l’exécutif, David a accepté de devenir le premier 
Directeur exécutif de la Société. Il ne s’est jamais laissé décourager 
par l’ampleur de la tâche et a aidé à mettre en place des procédures 
opérationnelles efficaces et efficientes pour le bureau et l’exécutif de 
la SSC.

David est devenu membre de la SSC au début des années 1980. Il explique 
: « J’ai adhéré à la SSC parce qu’à l’époque, il n’y avait pas assez de 
membres non universitaires capables d’influencer la direction et les 
objectifs de la Société. » Il juge son travail bénévole au sein de la 
Société très gratifiant : « Ce travail m’a toujours énergisé, parce 
qu’il m’a permis de côtoyer des professionnels hautement compétents et 
motivés. »
