  The Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies (COPSS) announced
today that the 2007 Presidents' Award is given to Jeffrey S. Rosenthal,
from the University of Toronto. This announcement was made at the Joint
Statistical Meetings, in Salt Lake City.

  The Presidents' Award is the most prestigious honour bestowed by COPSS.
It is awarded annually to a statistician under the age of 40 in
recognition of outstanding contributions to the profession.

  Jeffrey is the 27th recipient of the Presidents' Award. The citation
reads as follows:

  "For fundamental contributions to probability theory, stochastic
processes and MCMC algorithms with applications to statistics; for
seminal contributions to the theoretical underpinnings of the
convergence rates of MCMC algorithms; for his prolific record of
collaboration, resulting in significant publications in economics,
mathematical finance, artificial intelligence and survival analysis; and
for outstanding mentoring and extraordinary skill at communicating some
of the deeper ideas of our discipline through the media (print, radio,
and TV) and through the publication of a general audience book on
probability in real life which, less than two years after publication is
in its 6th printing."

  Jeffrey Rosenthal was born in Scarborough (Ontario) in 1967. He studied
mathematics and statistics at theUniversity of Toronto (B.Sc., 1988) and
at Harvard (Ph.D., 1992). He worked at the University ofMinnesota for
one year before joining the Department of Statistics at the University
of Toronto, where he is was promoted to the rank of Full Professor in
2000. Among other honours, Jeffrey became a fellow of the Institute of
Mathematical Statistics in 2005 and won the CRM-SSC Award in 2006.

Le Comite des presidents de societes statistiques (COPSS) a annonce
aujourd'hui que le Prix des presidents est attribue cette annee a
Jeffrey S. Rosenthal, de l'Universite de Toronto. Cette annonce a ete
faite dans le cadre du Congres de statistique conjoint, a Salt Lake
City.

  Le Prix des presidents est la plus haute distinction accordee par le
COPSS. Il est attribue annuellement a un statisticien de moins de 40 ans
s'etant illustre par l'ampleur de ses contributions a la profession.

l'etude des processus stochastiques, des algorithmes MCMC et de leurs
applications statistiques ; pour ses travaux d'avant-garde sur le
comportement des taux de convergence des algorithmes MCMC ; pour
l'abondance et la diversite de ses collaborations, qui sont a l'origine
d'importantes publications en economique, en finance mathematique, en
intelligence artificielle et en analyse de survie ; et pour ses qualites
exceptionnelles de mentor et de vulgarisateur qui ont permis au grand
public d'apprehender certaines des notions les plus complexes du domaine
par le truchement des media (presse, radio et tele) et la publication
d'un ouvrage sur les applications concretes des probabilites qui en est
a son 6e tirage en moins de deux ans. >

  Jeffrey Rosenthal est ne a Scarborough (Ontario) en 1967. Il a etudie
les mathematiques et la statistique a l'Universite de Toronto (B.Sc.,
1988) et a Harvard (Ph.D., 1992). Il a travaille pendant un an a
l'Universite du Minnesota avant d'etre recrute par le Departement de
statistique de l'Universite de Toronto, ou il a ete promu au rang de
professeur titulaire en l'an 2000. Entre autres distinctions, Jeffrey a
ete nomme compagnon de l'Institut de statistique mathematique en 2005 et
a remporte le Prix CRM-SSC Award en 2006.
