To: CMS and CMESG members
From: Eric Muller, ICMI Canadian Representative

Below you will find a communication that I have received from Bernard
Hodgson, Secretary-General of the International Commission on
Mathematical Instruction (ICMI). In it you will find ?a TRIPLE CALL
FOR NOMINATIONS for ICMI?.

Even though ICMI has its beginnings early in the last century, these
Executive Committee elections will be the first ever. In the past,
members of the Executive were appointed by the International
Mathematical Union (IMU).

Many Canadian Mathematicians and Mathematics Educators have
contributed to the various ICMI activities, such as, ICME congresses,
ICMI Studies and other special conferences. However none of us has
contributed as much as Bernard Hodgson whose term concludes with this
Executive. In his capacity as Secretary General he has worked
tirelessly, with great vision and distinction for two consecutive
terms. He has spearheaded many of the above activities, written the
ICMI Bulletin, and worked diligently to develop a system of elections
that will better represent the ICMI membership. Thus Canada has been
ably represented on the Executive for a good number of years. Clearly
other member countries will wish to have their turn with a
representative on the new Executive. Nevertheless I believe that
Canada should demonstrate its support for the new election process by
submitting nominations.

In order to meet the deadlines set by ICMI, I will be pleased to
receive your nomination(s) for the ICMI Nominating Committee by Friday
March 9, and for positions on the ICMI Executive by Friday April 6.

Thank you,

TO: Members of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) and the
International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI)

The IMU General Assembly, held last August in Santiago de Compostela,
adopted new rules concerning the elections of the various IMU
committees. A consequence of these changes is that the election of the
Executive Committee of the International Commission on Mathematical
Instruction (ICMI) will henceforth take place during the General
Assembly of ICMI.

The next ICMI General Assembly will be held in July 2008 in
Monterrey, México, on the occasion of the 11th International Congress
on Mathematical Education (ICME-11). This General Assembly will elect
the 2010-2012 Executive Committee of ICMI.

NB: The details of the new Procedures for Election of ICMI can be
found in the Bulletin of the International Mathematical Union No 53,
June 2006, pp. 36-40, or in IMU Circular Letter #6/2006, June 2006,
accessible on IMU website
http://www.mathunion.org/Publications/CircularLetters.html, or on the
IMU webpage
http://www.mathunion.org/Organization/election_procedures_update2006.html(second part of the
