PUBLIC LECTURE  -- STEPHEN LEWIS
'Deciphering Our World'

Stephen Lewis, the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in
Africa, will deliver a public lecture at the Canadian Mathematical
Society's "2005 Canadian Mathematics Education Forum", Friday May 6, 7:30-
9:00pm in the University of Toronto's Medical Sciences Auditorium, 1 King's
College Circle. Mr. Lewis will discuss the importance of mathematics
education  in creating a questioning and informed public. See:

The 2005 Canadian Mathematics Education Forum will be held May 6-8, 2005 at
the Fields Institute and the University of Toronto. The Forum is the third in
a series of national mathematics education conferences, following ones held in
2003 in Montreal and 1995 in Quebec. The purpose of the 2005 forum is to
develop a national dialogue, among educators at all levels of schooling, about
important issues and concerns in the development and future of mathematics
education in Canada. Its overall theme is "Why teach Mathematics?" The forum
is by invitation only and has 200 participants coming from all sectors
connected to education in mathematics, and from all provinces and territories
of Canada, including teachers and instructors of mathematics at all levels,
researchers in mathematics and mathematics education, and representatives of
