Hello!

The CMS Winter Meeting is going virtual from December 3-8 and the Student
Committee has lots of student activities lined up: Student Social, Student
Research Talks, Poster Session, and Mini-Course in Mathematical
Communication. We encourage both undergraduate and graduate students to
participate.

StudC will provide a virtual coupon to waive the registration fee to the
meeting to students that give a talk or present a poster, so don’t miss out
on this great opportunity to share your research and network with people
from across the country!

*Note that in order to participate at these activities, you must register

*Student Social:*
Network and interact with fellow students in a non-academic relaxed
atmosphere buoyed by icebreaker activities! Mathematically themed games are
also planned. You may fill in the following Google Form if you would like
to participate: https://forms.gle/h245MxNahK2byy8G6.

*Student Research Talks Session:*
Present your research to your peers in a 20-minute talk! All research areas
in pure/applied math, statistics, and math education will be considered.

Interested students should submit a title and abstract with their name and
affiliation to studc-winter20-session at cms.math.ca *before 11:59p.m. EST on
Friday, November 20th*. Students selected to present will be notified
shortly after their submissions has been received.

*AARMS-CMS Student Poster Session:*
Get creative and design a poster describing your research! All poster
presentations will be judged by a jury of professors, and the top three
winners will be awarded prizes.

Interested students should submit a title and abstract with their name and
affiliation to studc-winter20-poster at cms.math.ca *before 11:59p.m. EST on
Friday, November 20th*. Students selected to present will be notified
shortly after their submission has been received.

*Mini-Course:*
The student committee of the CMS has prepared a (*free!*) mini-course on
communication in mathematics. We will hear about how to write a good paper
(with mathematical modelling as an example), how to write good scholarships
and fellowships applications, and how the recent pandemic has influenced
communication in mathematics.
Speakers: Mike Bennett (University of British Columbia), Robert Smith?
(University of Ottawa), and NSERC.

La réunion d’hiver de la SMC aura lieu du 3 au 8 décembre et le comité
étudiant (StudC) prépare plusieurs activités pour les étudiant(e)s de tous
les cycles d’études : activité sociale, session de présentations de
recherche, session de présentations par affiche et mini-cours sur la
communication mathématique.

StudC offrira un coupon virtuel éliminant les frais d’inscription à la
rencontre aux étudiants qui donnent une présentation ou qui présentent une

*Session de présentations de recherche :*
Donnez une présentation de 20 minutes sur votre sujet de recherche! Toutes
les soumissions dans les domaines purs et appliqués des mathématiques,
statistiques, ou concernant la pédagogie de ces domaines seront considérées.

(heure de l'Est) le vendredi 20 novembre*. Ceux sélectionnés seront
notifiés peu après que leur soumission est reçue.

*Session de présentations par affiche :*
Faites preuve de créativité et concevez une affiche qui présente votre
recherche! Les affiches seront jugées par des professeurs et trois gagnants
se verront accorder des prix.

Les étudiant(e)s intéressés devraient soumettre un titre et un résumé avec
leur nom et affiliation à studc-hiver20-affiche at smc.math.ca *avant 23h59
(heure de l'Est) le vendredi 20 novembre*. Ceux sélectionnés seront
notifiés peu après que leur soumission est reçue.

*Mini-cours :*
Le comité étudiant de la SMC a préparé un mini-cours (*gratuit!*) sur la
communication en mathématiques. Au programme : comment bien écrire un
article de recherche (avec la modélisation mathématique comme exemple),
comment faire de bonnes demandes de bourse et comment la récente pandémie a
impacté la communication en mathématiques.
