From abonato at rogers.com Tue Jan 2 12:24:36 2007 From: abonato at rogers.com (Anthony Bonato) Date: Tue Jan 2 12:44:47 2007 Subject: [grad-students] New Masters program at Laurier Message-ID: <00bd01c72e92$e0650c10$3ebf644a@Anthony> New Masters program in Mathematics for Science and Finance at Wilfrid Laurier University Our new Masters program in Mathematics for Science and Finance is a unique blend of pure and applied mathematics. The program supplies practical experience in applying methods from these disciplines to problems arising in science and finance. One of the main goals of the program is to provide graduates with strong skills applicable across many disciplines. The combination of skills and experience gained through the program should be attractive to both graduate schools and employers at financial institutions and industrial companies in North America and around the world. The program's flexibility provides students with the opportunity to specialize or gain a broad education in applicable mathematics. To learn more about this new program, visit our web page http://www.wlu.ca/science/math/masters or contact the Graduate Coordinator, Dr. Anthony Bonato http://info.wlu.ca/~wwwmath/faculty/bonato/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The CAS Trust Scholarship program, funded by donations to the CAS Trust, will award up to three $1,500 scholarships to deserving students for the 2007-2008 academic year. Applicants must be a permanent resident of the U.S. or Canada, or have a permanent resident visa, and admitted as a full-time student to a U.S. or Canadian educational institution to be eligible. Applicants must also have demonstrated high scholastic achievement and a strong interest in mathematics or a mathematics-related field. Recommendations, transcripts, actuarial exam results, work experience, and written essays will all be considered in selecting the award recipients. Preference will be given to applicants who have passed at least one actuarial exam. Additional details and applications are available online at http://www.casact.org/academic/index.cfm?fa=scholar_apply. Applications are due by May 1, 2007 and winners will be notified in July. The intent of the scholarships is to further students' interest in the property/casualty actuarial profession and to encourage pursuit of the CAS designation. Established in 1979, the Casualty Actuarial Society Trust affords CAS members and others an income tax deduction for funds contributed and used for scientific, literary, or educational purposes. For the position of webmaster the duties include: - Maintaining and updating the content on the Studc website (http://www.cms.math.ca/Students/)- - Adding links to the Knot a Braid of Links cool math site of the week service (http://camel.math.ca/Kabol/) - Moderating the student listservs, as well as actively forwarding relevant content to them -Moderating the Studc webform (http://www.studc.com/forum) The webmaster must be able to code basic HTML and be familiar with an sftp client. Basic knowledge of unix is an asset. For the other positions, all students are encouraged to apply and will be considered though we are particularly interested in a student with graphic design experience, someone willing to serve as the MITACS liaison and an undergraduate with experience working with student groups. If any of these apply to you, please mention them on the application. Among the Student Committee's current projects are: publishing a national student newsletter, developing a resource Web site for students, helping the CUMC in preparing its proceedings, supporting local student math conferences and seminars. For more information on the Committee's responsibilities and duties visit: http://www.cms.math.ca/Docs/Terms/TofRef/studc.html For more information on the Committee in general, visit our webpage: http://www.cms.math.ca/Students The Committee members' terms will run from August 1, 2007 to June 30, 2009. Both graduate and undergraduate students are invited and encouraged to apply. Joining the student committee is an excellent opportunity to learn about how mathematics in Canada is organized, to meet students and professors from across the country, to do some meaningful work, and to have a great time! In addition, student members will receive funding (both travel and accommodations) to attend the next four CMS meetings, taking place in London (Ontario), Montreal, Ottawa and Vancouver. If you are an interested student, or know someone who may be, please contact the Chair of the Student Committee via e-mail at chair-studc@cms.math.ca. We'd love to send you an application form, and to talk to you about the responsibilities and benefits of joining the Student Committee! The Thematic Program on Arithmetic Geometry, Hyperbolic Geometry and Related Topics will take place at the Institute July to December 2008 and the Thematic Program on O-Minimal Structures and Real Analytic Geometry will take place at the Institute from January to June 2009. The fellowships provide for a period of engagement in research and participation in the activities of the Institute. They may be offered in conjunction with partner universities, through which a further period of support may be possible. One recipient will be awarded the Institute's prestigious Jerrold E. Marsden Postdoctoral Fellowship. Applicants seeking postdoctoral fellowships funded by other agencies (such as NSERC or international fellowships) are encouraged to request the Fields Institute as their proposed location of tenure, and should apply to the Institute for a letter of invitation. Funding is being sought from NSF to support junior U.S. participants in these programs. Eligibility: Qualified candidates who will have recently completed a PhD in a related area of the mathematical sciences are encouraged to apply. Deadline: December 7, 2007, although late applications may be considered. Application Information: Please consult www.fields.utoronto.ca/proposals/postdoc.html The Fields Institute is strongly committed to diversity within its community and especially welcomes applications from visible minority group members, women, Aboriginal persons, persons with disabilities, members of sexual minority groups, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas. To learn more about this program, visit our web page http://www.wlu.ca/science/math/masters or contact the Graduate Coordinator, Dr. Anthony Bonato http://info.wlu.ca/~wwwmath/faculty/bonato/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
