International algebra meeting honors
Brazilian researcher

The event will be held in celebration of the 75th
anniversary of Aron Simis, retired emeritus professor
of the Federal University of Pernambuco.

Considered by the scientific community as one of the main
Brazilian researchers in the area of algebra, Professor
Aron Simis will be honored during the first edition of the
International Meeting of Commutative Algebra and Related
Areas. The international event will take place in Brazil,
at the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Sciences
(ICMC) of USP, in São Carlos, from July 17 to 21, 2017.

"Commutative algebra is a rich area for applications
within mathematics, being used, for instance, to solve
problems related to dynamical systems, analytic geometry,
topology and singularity theory," points out Professor
Victor Jorge Pérez of ICMC, one of the Coordinators of the
event. "However, in Brazil, there are only a few
researchers, research groups and events related to this
field of knowledge," adds Pérez.

In view of this, one of the objectives of the meeting is
to help developing an increasing number of young
researchers from Brazil and Latin America, creating an
appropriate atmosphere of cooperation. During the five
days of the event, there will be 15 plenary lectures in
total, 1 poster session and, moreover, 3 mini courses, to
wit:

• Rees Algebras: Criteria for Cohen-Macaulayness and
Integral Dependence, which will be taught by Bernd Ulrich
(Purdue University, United States);

• Defining Equations of Blowup Algebras, which will be
taught by Claudia Polini (University of Notre Dame, United
States);

• Aspects of homological and combinatorial commutative
algebra, to be taught by Jürgen Herzog (University of
Duisburg-Essen, Germany).

Registration for the event can be made through July 17,
using the electronic form available at the <a

The honoree - One of the great exponents of
commutative algebra in Brazil and in the world, Professor
Aron Simis is the author of more than 10 books/lecture
notes and about 100 scientific papers published in
internationally recognized journals. He directed 20 master
and doctoral students, as well as several postdoctoral
fellows throughout his career.

Professor Aron Simis began in 1963, when he finished his
degree in mathematics at the Federal University of
Pernambuco (UFPE), and obtained his Master's degree (1969)
and Ph.D. (1972) in mathematics from Queen'sUniversity,
Canada. He is a retired emeritus professor of the UFPE,
where he carries out continuous activities in the Graduate
School of the Department of Mathematics.

Currently, he is a visiting professor at ICMC. He is a
full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the
Academy of Sciences of Developing Countries. "The meeting
we will hold is a unique opportunity to recognize
Professor Aron Simis academic endeavor for Brazilian
mathematics," Perez said.

The event has the support of the Foundation for Research
Support of the State of São Paulo (FAPESP), the National
Council for Scientific and Technological Development
(CNPq), the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher
Education Personnel (CAPES), the National Institute of
Science and Technology of Mathematics (INCTMat) and the
department of mathematical sciences of the Italian
Politecnico di Torino.
