The Mathematics Department at the University of British Columbia,
Vancouver
is seeking candidates for a Tier II Canada Research Chair, with a
starting
date of July 1, 2014. The successful candidate will have a PhD,
normally
obtained in the last ten years, and a record of world-class
research
accomplishments in mathematics, and will be expected to teach
effectively at
the undergraduate and graduate levels and to supervise graduate
students.

The successful candidate will have an excellent record of
scientific
accomplishment in the development of innovative mathematical
approaches to
address challenges posed by large datasets, interpreted
broadly. Mathematical researchers who are developing techniques to
interpret, analyze and extract information from large datasets in
any field
are encouraged to apply. Potential mathematical areas include (i)
compressed sensing; (ii) computational harmonic analysis; (iii)
graphical
models; (iv) high-dimensional data analysis. Potential areas of
application
include (i) model-based approaches to environmental and industrial
exploration and monitoring data; (ii) model-based analysis of
genomic,
patient and population-wide datasets in the health sciences; (iii)
interpretation of large experimental datasets from physical
science; (iv)
recovery of transmitted signals in noisy communication systems;
(v)
reconstruction of complex images from limited observations.
Neither of
these lists is meant to be exhaustive. Exceptional candidates may
be
considered from existing or emerging areas of research excellence
in the
department.

Candidates should ensure that their statement of research
interests
includes a description of how their current and future research
will
address challenges arising from large-scale datasets.

The CRC Tier II is at the level of a tenure-track Assistant or
tenured
Associate Professor. Salary will be commensurate with experience
and
research record. Details about the federal government's CRC
programme can
be found at:

Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply on-line as described
at: http://www.mathjobs.org/jobs/UBC/.

Alternatively, applicants may send a current CV including a list
of
publications, statement of research and teaching interests, a
teaching
dossier or similar record of teaching experience and supervision,
and
should arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent
directly to:
