</a>This indeed seems like an interesting (and challenging!)
project.<br>
They propose to produce a book, a DVD and a wiki to which all can
contribute on an ongoing basis--all of this focused on helping teachers
make connections between the mathematics they teach and the field of
mathematics. The first meeting of the design team is less than a
week away, but they are asking for our input. <br>
Many of us will know a few members of the 8-person team. First of
all it includes Christiane Rousseau! <br>
The Chair Bill Barton has often visited Canada and at least once (if my
memory serves) CMESG. Bill McCallum I know from work with calculus
reform. <br>
One thing I liked about the description is their aim to produce a book to
"stimulate" math teachers. A worthy ambition.<br>

Subject: The Klein Project<br><br>
Dear ICMI Representatives and Chairs of ICMI Affiliated Study
Groups,<br><br>
ICMI and its mother organisation, the IMU, have launched jointly last
year the so called "Klein Project", whose purpose is to revisit
the seminal reflection of Felix Klein on mathematical knowledge related
to teaching. It is inspired by Klein's famous book "Elementary
Mathematics from an Advanced Standpoint", published a century ago,
and the aim is to produce documents helping mathematics teachers to make
connections between the mathematics they teach, or can be asked to teach,
and the field of mathematics, while taking into account the evolution of
this field over the last century.<br><br>
A Design Team has been appointed by ICMI and IMU with the duty of
managing the project and defining it in practical terms. The first
meeting of the Design Team will start next Saturday, May 30. Your
comments or suggestions are most welcome and should be sent to the Chair
of the Design Team, Bill Barton (b.barton@auckland.ac.nz).<br><br>
It is already planned that this project will result in a book published
in several languages, a resource DVD and a wiki-based website.<br><br>
The composition of the Design Team can be found the Klein Project page on
the ICMI website, under "Other Activities".<br><br>
