Ses intérêts de recherche portent sur la géométrie des variétés algébriques non complètes, en particulier les variétés affines et les actions de groupes sur ces variétés. Il a accompli sa carrière à l'Université McGill où il a dirigé le Département de mathématiques et statistique de 1988 à 1994. Au cours de ces six années, son département a connu un important essor. Il a aussi dirigé l'Institut des Sciences mathématiques (ISM) de 2000 à 2003.</div><div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; min-height: 14px; "><br></div><div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; ">Le professeur Russell prendra sa retraite prochainement après une fructueuse carrière de recherche. His research interests focus on the geometry of non complete algebraic varieties, in particular the affine varieties, and the group actions on these. He spent his career at McGill University and chaired the Department of Mathematics and Statistics from 1988 to 1994, a period of great development for the department.
