Mathematics and Statistics Department at the Université de Montréal, was named
Director of the <b><span style='font-weight:bold'>Centre de recherches mathématiques</span></b>
(CRM) on </span></font><font size=2 color=black face=Arial><span lang=EN-CA
style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:black'>September 14, 2004</span></font><font
size=2 color=black face=Arial><span lang=EN-CA style='font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:Arial;color:black'>. Professor Lalonde has been a member of the CRM
since 1991. </span></font></p>
<p class=CM3 style='line-height:13.9pt'><font size=2 color=black face=Arial><span
lang=EN-CA style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:black'>A member of
the Royal Society of Canada, Professor Lalonde enjoys a well-established
scientific reputation in the international community. From 1996 to 2000, he
directed the Institut des sciences mathématiques (ISM), a consortium of six
Québec universities (Montréal, McGill, UQAM, Concordia, Laval and </span></font><font
size=2 color=black face=Arial><span lang=EN-CA style='font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:Arial;color:black'>Sherbrooke</span></font><font size=2
color=black face=Arial><span lang=EN-CA style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:
Arial;color:black'>). In this capacity, he improved the visibility of the ISM
by putting in place measures furthering the place of Montréal, and the province
as a whole, as a North American centre of excellence in mathematical research
and training. </span></font></p>

Arial;color:black'>Mr. Lalonde was also the Founder and Director of the Centre interuniversitaire
de recherche en géométrie différentielle et en topologie (Interuniversity
research centre in differential geometry and topology) which gathers together
the best geometers and topologists from UQAM, McGill and Concordia
universities. </span></font></p>

and physicist by training, François Lalonde holds a Doctorat d’Etat

size=2 color=black face=Arial><span lang=EN-CA style='font-size:10.0pt;

color:black'>, in the field of differential topology. He was a Killam Research
Fellowship recipient (roughly equivalent to an American Guggenheim) in 2000-2002.
François Lalonde holds the only Canada Research Chair in Symplectic Geometry
and Topology. These disciplines focus on the development of a unified theory
aiming at bridging the gap between classical physics and quantum mechanics. </span></font></p>

Arial;color:black'>Founded at the Université de Montréal in 1969, the CRM was
the first mathematics research institute established in </span></font><font
size=2 color=black face=Arial><span lang=EN-CA style='font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:Arial;color:black'>Canada</span></font><font size=2 color=black
face=Arial><span lang=EN-CA style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial;
color:black'> (it is now joined by the Fields Institute in </span></font><font
size=2 color=black face=Arial><span lang=EN-CA style='font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:Arial;color:black'>Ontario</span></font><font size=2 color=black
face=Arial><span lang=EN-CA style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial;
color:black'> and the Pacific Institute for Mathematical Sciences in </span></font><font

Arial;color:black'>). In 1984, The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research
Council of Canada (NSERC) conferred on the CRM the status of national research
center. Its main funding sources are NSERC, the Québec natural sciences
research council (FQRNT) and five sponsoring Québec universities (principally
Montréal, but also McGill, UQAM, Concordia, and Laval). </span></font></p>
<p class=CM3 style='line-height:13.9pt'><font size=2 color=black face=Arial><span
lang=EN-CA style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:black'>The Centre
runs an annual thematic program as well as shorter programs and workshops.
Courses aimed at graduate students and postdoctoral fellows wishing to
specialize in new areas are usually part of the thematic programs. There are
many well-established mathematicians around the world who have furthered their
research and training at the CRM. </span></font></p>

lang=EN-CA style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:black'>The CRM has
over 150 members and postdoctoral fellows and it welcomes numerous visiting
researchers each year. The activities of the Centre encompass basic research in
mathematics as well as several fields of application. The majority of members
are part of eight thematic laboratories (or research groups). The research
projects pursued by the CRM’s members are of world-class caliber. The
CRM’s membership is the lifeblood of research in mathematics in the </span></font><font

nommé, le 14 septembre, directeur du Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM),

Arial;color:black'>Aussi membre de la Société royale du Canada, le professeur
Lalonde jouit d'une grande renommée scientifique sur les scènes nationale et
internationale. Il a été directeur de l'Institut des sciences mathématiques
(ISM), un consortium de six universités québécoises de 1996 à 2000. À ce titre,
il a accru le rayonnement de l'ISM et contribué grandement à la mise en place
de mesures destinées à faire de Montréal et du Québec un pôle d'excellence en
Amérique sur les plans de la formation et de la recherche en mathématiques. </span></font></p>

Arial;color:black'>M. Lalonde a également fondé et dirigé le Centre interuniversitaire
derecherche en géométrie différentielle et en topologie (CIRGET), qui regroupe
les meilleurs géomètres et topologues des universités montréalaises. </span></font></p>

Arial;color:black'>Mathématicien et physicien de formation ainsi que lauréat
d'une bourse Killam, François Lalonde est titulaire de la seule chaire de
recherche du Canada consacrée à la géométrie symplectique et à la topologie.
Ces disciplines se consacrent au développement de la «théorie unifiée» dont le
but est de faire le pont entre la physique classique et la mécanique quantique.

<p class=CM3 style='line-height:14.65pt'><font size=2 color=black face=Arial><span
lang=FR-CA style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:black'>Fondé à
l'Université de Montréal en 1969, le Centre de recherches mathématiques fut le
premier institut de recherche mathématique à être établi au Canada (rejoint
depuis par l’Institut Fields en Ontario et le Pacific Institute for the Mathematical
Sciences dans l’Ouest canadien). En 1984, le Conseil de recherches en
sciences naturelles et en génie du Canada (CRSNG) a conféré au CRM le statut de
centre national. Les principales sources de financement du CRM proviennent du
CRSNG, du Fonds québécois de recherche sur la nature et les technologies
(FQRNT), et cinq universités québécoises (principalement l’Université de
Montréal, mais également l’UQÀM, McGill, Concordia et Laval). </span></font></p>
<p class=CM3 style='line-height:14.65pt'><font size=2 color=black face=Arial><span
lang=FR-CA style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:black'>Le CRM
regroupe plus de 150 membres et boursiers postdoctoraux, en plus d'accueillir
chaque année un grand nombre de chercheurs invités. Les activités du CRM
englobent la recherche fondamentale ainsi que divers domaines d'application. La
majorité des membres font partie de huit laboratoires thématiques. Les projets
de recherche qui y sont poursuivis sont le fait d'une équipe de chercheurs de
calibre international, composée de l'essentiel des forces vives du Québec dans
