Christian Genest
McGill University

Thursday, April 20, 2023
5:30 pm EDT
Join us in person or online for the 2023 CRM-Fields-PIMS Prize Lecture <https://utoronto.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=409ac47d10fe3e0ce401c4ea5&id=c6fe7b7b56&e=6928441060>, where Christian Genest (McGill University) will speak on "Drawing inference without directly relevant data."

The talk will highlight Genest's statistical research of the past 40 years, including his contributions to expert use, dependence modelling and risk assessment, a common thread between which is the development of methods for situations where direct observations are unavailable. In addition, he will discuss applications to fields such as insurance and environment science.

Bio: Christian Genest is one of the leading statisticians in Canada, whose work has had dual impact on both theory and real-world applications. He is best known for his contributions to multivariate analysis and was a pioneer in the expansive use of copula models in science. Together with a few close collaborators, he combined nonparametric methods and the asymptotic theory of empirical processes to design a broad array of rank-based inference tools for building, selecting, fitting, and validating stochastic models within this class. Additionally, Genest has contributed to group decision making, prioritization techniques, multivariate extreme-value theory and, most recently, to space-time modelling of rare events in environmental science.

The CRM-Fields-PIMS prize is the premier Canadian award for research achievements in the mathematical sciences. It is awarded jointly by the three largest Canadian mathematics institutes: the Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM) in Montréal, the Fields Institute in Toronto, and the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS) in Vancouver.
