The University of Winnipeg has designated an NSERC Tier II Canada 
Research Chair (CRC) in Data Science and is currently seeking 
applications from qualified internal and external applicants. Preference 
will be given to racialized persons. Please confidentially self-identify

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in computer science, 
statistics, mathematics, economics, geography or a related field and 
will have a demonstrated track record of peer-reviewed publications, 
external research funding, and national/international exposure through 
invited lectures.

The candidate should be a strong methodologist with an ability to 
contribute to a variety of interdisciplinary areas and will have 
expertise in machine learning, data mining, calibration and analysis of 
big data, visualization and analysis of high-dimensional data or 
mathematical modelling. Candidates should demonstrate leadership in data 
applications such as bioinformatics, geovisualization, multivariate 
analysis, statistical computing, and statistical learning.

The successful candidate will be nominated for a Tier II CRC and, upon 
successful nomination, will hold or be appointed at the rank of 
Assistant or Associate Professor. The Chair will be situated within a 
department consistent with their expertise (for example, in the 
Department of Applied Computer Science, Department of Mathematics and 
Statistics, Department of Economics or Department of Geography).

The proposed Chair will be expected to develop a rigorous, independently 
funded and internationally recognized research program and to inspire 
and support talent development in the field among students and to work 
collegially with existing faculty members to foster existing links and 
build new links between departments. The candidate will contribute to 
service and teaching within the University of Winnipeg’s undergraduate 
and/or graduate programs.

18, 2022 with the expected decision date by the program in April 2023.

Appointment to this Canada Research Chair position is subject to review 
and approval by the Canada Research Chairs Secretariat, in accordance 
with the regulations set for Tier II Canada Research Chairs 
<http://www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/>. Tier II Chairs are intended for 
exceptional emerging scholars with less than 10 years of experience as 
an active researcher in their field at the time of nomination.

extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility 
for a Tier II Chair assessed through the program’s Tier II justification

Tier II nominees should:

  * be excellent emerging researchers who have demonstrated particular
    research creativity;
  * have demonstrated the potential to achieve international recognition
    in their fields in the next five to ten years;
  * be proposing an original, innovative research program of high quality;
  * as a chair holder, have the potential to attract excellent trainees,
    students and future researchers.
