      *CRM-ISM POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS 2021-2022*

The 2021-2022 Postdoctoral Awards Competition begins in September 2020. 
Please read the following statement carefully.

The Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM) and the Institut des 
sciences mathématiques (ISM) are pleased to announce the creation of 10 
postdoctoral positions for young mathematical scientists for the 
academic year 2021. This new initiative is a reaction to the impact of 
the economic downturn on academia created by the unprecedented COVID 
crisis. There have been many hiring freezes and cancelled job searches 
across the world. As a result, many recent graduates, even from top 
programs, are facing unemployment. The CRM and the ISM, has responded, 
albeit in a small way, by creating these new postdoctoral fellowships.

The CRM-ISM postdoctoral fellowships are awarded to promising 
researchers who have recently obtained or expect to obtain a Ph.D in the 
mathematical sciences. The fellowship offers an annual stipend of at 
least $40,000 CAD for one year, with possibility of renewal for a second 
year. Furthermore, an annual amount of $1,000 CAD in research funds will 
be made available. This is a research fellowship allowing the recipient 
to devote most of his or her time to research under the supervision of a 
professor from one of the CRM and ISM member universities. If fellows 
wish to teach, they may request to be offered teaching assignments for 
which they will receive an additional salary.

The CRM is proud to subscribe to the Université de Montréal’s policy on 
adapting to cultural diversity and is committed to taking into account 
the diversity and the systemic and individual barriers to access (for 
example, related to ethnic origin, gender, disability) when selecting 
visiting researchers.

Applications are welcome in all fields of research in which the CRM and 
the ISM are actively involved, namely: actuarial and financial 
mathematics, algebra and number theory, analysis, applied mathematics, 
category theory, combinatorics, geometry and topology, mathematical 
methods in medical imaging, mathematical physics, nonlinear dynamics, 
probability, quantum computing and statistics.

The CRM is a national research center in the mathematical sciences. It 
includes thirteen research laboratories, and every year it organizes a 
wide range of events attracting participants from around the world.

The Institut des sciences mathématiques (ISM) is a consortium of nine 
Québec universities (Concordia University, HEC Montréal, Université 
Laval, McGill University, Université de Montréal, UQAM, UQTR, Université 
de Sherbrooke and Bishop’s University) for training and collaboration in 
the mathematical sciences.

*Eligibility Requirements*

To be eligible for a CRM-ISM postdoctoral fellowship, researchers must 
have obtained a Ph.D. after May 1st, 2017.

Please note that while it is not an eligibility requirement, preference 
will be given to candidates who are not currently registered at one of 
the CRM and ISM member universities.

Le concours de bourses postdoctorales 2021-2022 débute en septembre 
2020. Veuillez lire attentivement ce qui suit.

Le Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM) et l’Institut des sciences 
mathématiques sont heureux d’annoncer la création de 10 postes de 
stagiaires postdoctoraux pour de jeunes chercheurs en mathématiques pour 
l’année académique 2021. Cette nouvelle initiative est une réaction à 
l’impact du ralentissement économique sur le milieu universitaire créée 
par la crise sans précédent de la COVID. Il y a eu de nombreux gels 
d’embauche et annulations d’offres d’emploi à travers le monde. En 
conséquence, de nombreux chercheurs nouvellement diplômés, même issus de 
programmes de haut niveau, sont confrontés à la précarité d’emploi. Le 
CRM et l’ISM ont répondu, quoique modestement, en créant ces nouvelles 
bourses postdoctorales.

Les bourses postdoctorales CRM-ISM sont attribuées à des chercheurs 
prometteurs qui ont récemment obtenu ou prévoient d’obtenir un doctorat 
en sciences mathématiques. La bourse offre une allocation annuelle d’au 
moins 40 000 $ CAN pour un an, avec possibilité de renouvellement pour 
une deuxième année. De plus, un montant annuel de 1 000 $ CAN en fonds 
de recherche sera mis à disposition. Il s’agit d’une bourse permettant 
au bénéficiaire de consacrer la majeure partie de son temps à la 
recherche sous la supervision d’un professeur d’une des universités 
membres du CRM et de l’ISM. Si les boursiers souhaitent enseigner, ils 
devront postuler pour obtenir des tâches d’enseignement pour lesquelles 
ils recevront un salaire supplémentaire.

Le CRM est fier de souscrire à la politique sur l’adaptation à la 
diversité culturelle de l’Université de Montréal et s’engage à prendre 
en compte la diversité et les barrières systémiques et individuelles à 
l’accès (par exemple, liées à l’origine ethnique, au genre, à un 
handicap) lors de la sélection des chercheurs invités.

Nous acceptons des demandes dans tous les domaines de recherche du CRM 
et de l’ISM, à savoir: algèbre et théorie des nombres, analyse, 
combinatoire, dynamique non-linéaire, géométrie et topologie, 
informatique quantique, mathématiques actuarielles et financières, 
mathématiques appliquées, méthodes mathématiques en imagerie médicale, 
physique mathématique, probabilités, statistique et théorie des catégories.

Le CRM est un centre national de recherches en sciences mathématiques. 
Il regroupe treize laboratoires de recherche et organise chaque année un 
large éventail d’activités scientifiques faisant appel à une 
participation internationale.

L’Institut des sciences mathématiques est un consortium de neuf 
universités québécoises (Université Concordia, HEC Montréal, Université 
Laval, Université McGill, Université de Montréal, UQAM, UQTR, Université 
de Sherbrooke et Université Bishop’s) qui promeut la formation et la 
collaboration en sciences mathématiques.

*Critères d’admissibilité*

Pour être éligible à une bourse postdoctorale CRM-ISM, les chercheurs 
doivent avoir obtenu un doctorat après le 1er mai 2017.

Veuillez noter que la préférence sera accordée à des candidats qui ne 
sont pas actuellement inscrits dans une université membre du CRM et de 
l’ISM. Ceci ne constitue cependant pas un critère d’éligibilité.
