Dear colleagues, 

Tom Brzustowski, former president of NSERC, former deputy chair of the BIRS Board, and a great friend of many of us, has passed. Canadian mathematical sciences owe Tom a great deal. To the younger generation of mathematical scientists among us, here is what I wrote in 2005 about Tom's contributions to our community.
