Fields Institute Deputy Director Search
The Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences invites applications for the position of Deputy Director for a three- to five-year term (renewable once) beginning July 1, 2020, or as soon as convenient afterwards. 

Founded in 1992, the Fields Institute is an independent research institute located on the St. George campus of the University of Toronto. Its mission is to provide a supportive and rich environment for mathematics innovation and education and to promote collaboration between mathematicians and those working in other disciplines such as engineering, the physical and biological sciences, medicine, economics, finance, telecommunications or information systems. 

Annually, the Institute hosts in excess of 5,000 visitors from all over the world for workshops, lectures, seminars, summer schools, conferences or outreach events. The Institute’s operations are primarily supported through funding from Ontario’s nine largest universities, the federal government of Canada through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the Ontario Government, and the National Science Foundation.

Primary Responsibilities

o    Works in collaboration with the Fields Director, its managers, and others across the Fields network, to direct and administer the Institute’s research activities and to advance mathematical sciences

o    Oversees and develops and implements policies for the adjudication process for general scientific and outreach activities

o    Attends and participates in meetings and events, as appropriate, including but not limited to:

o    weekly management meetings 

o    triannual Board of Directors meeting as an ex officio member of the Board

o    triannual Scientific Advisory Panel meetings

o    Represents the Institute on business affairs and serves on committees, as required

o    Oversees Institute activities and publications; establishes, builds, and stewards relationships with potential and current donors, including community members, corporations, foundations, and others; assists with the preparation of grants and proposals to potential funding sources and helps grow the membership of affiliated institutions

o    Provides ongoing oversight of activities to ensure timely completion of deliverables to funders and achievement of the Institute

Other Responsibilities

o    Budgetary, financial, and human resources management, including the following functions: IT, facilities, services and/or contracts and grants, with accountability for operational and budget processes, staff, finance, audits, and space management and planning

o    Assists the Director and Chair of the Board with developing the agenda and materials for executive meetings, briefings, and other meetings

o    Develops and prepares complex budgets with multiple funding sources for grants and endowments

o    Prepares plans for administrative services operations and improvement to processes

o    Performs other administrative operations as predominant focus of position

Education and Experience

The successful candidate will be a tenured mathematical scientist (Associate or Full Professor of Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics, or other relevant departments), at one of the Institute’s Principal Sponsoring Institutions. Candidates should:

o    be active researchers in the mathematical sciences with strong interpersonal and administrative skills,

o    possess a record of accomplishment in the mathematical sciences (mathematics, statistics, computer science, or other mathematical sciences),

o    have enthusiasm and vision for the Fields Institute, and,

o    have expertise and skills that are compatible with the Institute’s mission.
