CAIMS/PIMS Early Career Award in Applied Mathematics: Jean-Philippe Lessard

CAIMS*SCMAI and PIMS are pleased to announce that Professor Jean-Philippe Lessard of Université Laval is the winner of the 2016 CAIMS/PIMS Early Career Award in Applied Mathematics. Professor Lessard obtained his PhD in 2007 from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He held postdoctoral positions at the Free University of Amsterdam, Rutgers and Princeton, and is now associate professor at Université Laval. He is also a member of the Groupe Interdisciplinaire de Recherche en Éléments Finis (GIREF), which brings together researchers and research groups from a number of universities  to promote research, development, specialist training and interaction with industry, in the field of modeling and numerical simulation.

Professor Lessard's research interests are in dynamical systems. In particular, he uses and develops rigorous computational methods, topological methods and analytic estimates for the study of solutions of  partial differential equations, delay differential equations and ordinary differential equations. Professor Lessard has made substantial contributions to the theory of rigorous computing, and was cited for being "one of the world leading experts in the area" and "at the forefront of applied mathematics in Canada, blending traditional analysis with traditional computation to build something entirely new."

Professor Lessard will receive his award and deliver a plenary lecture at the 2016 Annual CAIMS*SCMAI meeting at the University of Alberta in June, 2016.

CAIMS*SCMAI et PIMS ont le plaisir d'annoncer que Jean-Philippe Lessard de l'Université Laval est le récipiendaire du Prix ¨CAIMS/PIMS Early Career Award¨ en mathématiques appliquées. Le professeur Lessard a obtenu son doctorat en 2007 de la Georgia Institute of Technology. Il a été chercheur postdoctoral à la Free University of Amsterdam, Rutgers, Princeton et est présentement professeur agrégé à l'Université Laval. Il est aussi membre du Groupe Interdisciplinaire de Rechercheen Éléments Finis (GIREF). Le GIREF rassemble des chercheurs et groups de recherche de différentes universités favorisant la promotion, le développement, la formation spécialisée ainsi que les interactions industrielles dans les domaines de la modélisation et des simulations numériques.

Les intérêts de recherche de M. Lessard sont en systèmes dynamiques. Plus particulièrement, il utilise et développe des méthodes computationnelles rigoureuses, des méthodes topologiques et des estimés analytiques pour l'étude de solutions d'équations aux dérivées partielles, d'équations différentielles avec retards et d'équations différentielles ordinaires. Plusieurs contributions de M. Lessard à la théorie des calculs rigoureux sont fondamentales et il a été cité comme étant un des experts mondiaux dans ce champ de recherche et à l'avant-garde des mathématiques appliquées au Canada, innovant en combinant les méthodes traditionnelles de l'analyse et du calcul numérique.

Le Professeur Lessard recevra son prix et présentera une conférence plénière à la réunion annuelle 2016 de CAIMS*SCMAI à la University of Alberta en juin 2016.
