DESCRIPTION

The aim of the Latin-American Congress of Mathematicians (CLAM) is to 
foster the development of mathematical research in Latin America and the 
Caribbean, to make visible the mathematical outcome of the region, and 
to promote the professional partnerships among the mathematicians of the 
region and the rest of the world. This congress takes place every four 
years. At each congress the UMALCA Prizes will be awarded to the most 
talented young mathematicians working in the region.

The previous four congresses have taken place in:

Río de Janeiro, Brazil, 2000

Cancún, Mexico, 2004

  Santiago de Chile, Chile, 2009

  Córdoba, Argentina, 2012

The fifth version of the CLAM will take place at the Campus of the 
Universidad del Norte in the city of Barranquilla, Colombia, from July, 
11^th to July 15^th ,2016. The organization of this event is a joint 
effort of Latin-American and Caribbean Mathematical Union (UMALCA), 
Colombian Mathematical Society (SCM) and Universidad del Norte. This 
event gathers mainly the mathematical community of Latin America and the 
Caribbean, and it is the venue where the recent advancements in 
mathematics are presented and shared. It is also the place where 
different mathematical societies and associations meet in order to share 
experiences and to plan the future relations and developments. Web page

OPEN CALL FOR THEMATIC SESSIONS

Members of UMALCA and the mathematical community of Latin-America and 
the Caribbean are invited to submit proposals for thematic sessions. A 
thematic session will focus on a specific area of mathematics and will 
consist of eight lectures of 40 minutes each. The duration of the 
Thematic Session will be of maximum six hours distributed in four blocks 
of one hour and a half each.

Proposals must be submitted by, at least two persons working in 
different countries, and must contain a brief description of the area 
that will focus on, together with a list of possible lecturers, 
including experts in the area, preferably working in, at least, three 
different countries.

The scientific committee of the V CLAM will decide on the acceptance of 
the proposals, taking into account their scientific level and trying to 
reach a thematic balance and a broad geographical scope.

The Organizing Committee of the V CLAM, depending on the availability of 
funds, is planning to finance up to 24 nights of hotel for each thematic 
session. The distribution of these nights of hotel will be done taking 
into account the needs and the place of origin of each one of its 
participants.

We plan to have sessions on diverse areas including: Algebra, Algebraic 
Geometry and Commutative Algebra, Geometry and Topology, Functional 
Analysis, Harmonic and Real Analysis, Approximation Theory, Dynamical 
Systems and Ergodic Theory, Partial Differential Equations, Mathematical 
Physics, Probability, Statistics, Number Theory, Combinatory and 
Discrete Mathematics, Numerical Analysis, Optimization and Control 
Theory, Logic and Computability, Teaching of Mathematics and History of 
Mathematics.

UMALCA PRIZES

Open call for nominations.

The UMALCA prize will be awarded at the V CLAM to young mathematicians 
who have excelled in mathematical research and whose permanent address 
is in one of the countries of Latin-America and the Caribbean. The 
scientific committee of the V CLAM will evaluate the candidates and will 
award the prizes.

All mathematical societies and institutions pursuing the development of 
mathematics and mathematical community in general are invited to 
nominate candidates for the UMALCA prize. Self-nominations will not be 
accepted.

Nominations must include the CV of the candidate and three letters of 
recommendation of experts on the area of research of the candidate. The 
scientific committee may require the anonymous opinion of other experts 
in the area of research of the candidate.

On the occasion of the V CLAM, the UMALCA prize will be awarded up to 
four mathematicians who must be 45 years old or younger by the 31^st of 
December of 2016.

SEMIPLENARY SPEAKERS AND MINI-COURSES

The program will include 8 semiplenary speakers and 4 mini.courses. The 
names of these mathematicians will be announced soon.

POSTER SESSION

The V CLAM will include a space for the presentation of posters on 
research results that have been previously published in journals, 
proceedings or books. The proposals for posters will be evaluated and 
selected by the Scientific Committee. The submission of proposals for 
posters will be done on-line through the web page of the Congress. The 
information regarding the submission process, the revision and the reply 
of the Poster Session will be announced in due time.

DESCRIPCIÓN

El Congreso Latinoamericano de Matemáticos (CLAM) tiene como objetivos 
principales contribuir al desarrollo de la investigación matemática en 
América Latina y el Caribe, aumentar la visibilidad de la producción 
matemática de la región y contribuir a establecer contactos 
profesionales entre matemáticos de la región y matemáticos de otras 
partes del mundo. Estos congresos se realizan cada cuatro años y, 
durante cada congreso, se entregan los premios UMALCA como un 
reconocimiento a los más destacados jóvenes matemáticos que trabajen en 
la región.

Se han realizado cuatro de estos congresos:

Río de Janeiro, Brasil, en 2000

Cancún, México, en 2004,

Santiago de Chile, Chile, en 2009

Córdoba, Argentina, en 2012.

La quinta versión del CLAM se llevará a cabo en el campus de la 
Universidad del Norte en la ciudad de Barranquilla, Colombia, del 11 al 
15 de julio de 2016. Su organización es un esfuerzo conjunto entre la 
Unión Matemática de América Latina y el Caribe (UMALCA), la Sociedad 
Colombiana de Matemáticas (SCM) y la Universidad del Norte. Este evento 
reúne a la comunidad matemática de América Latina y el Caribe, y se 
presentan y comparten los desarrollos más recientes en matemáticas. 
También es el lugar donde los representantes de las diferentes 
sociedades y asociaciones de matemáticas  se congregan para compartir 
experiencias y para planear las relaciones y los desarrollos futuros.

CONVOCATORIA ABIERTA PARA SESIONES TEMÁTICAS

El consejo científico del V CLAM invita a las sociedades matemáticas de 
la UMALCA y a la comunidad matemática de América Latina y el Caribe a 
proponer sesiones temáticas para el congreso.

  Cada sesión versará sobre un área de las matemáticas y constará de 
hasta ocho conferencias de cuarenta minutos cada una. La duración de 
cada sesión será de un máximo de seis horas distribuidas en cuatro 
bloques de una hora y treinta minutos.

Cada propuesta debe ser presentada por, al menos, dos coordinadores de 
países distintos, y deberá contener una breve descripción del tema al 
que estará dedicada y una lista tentativa de conferencistas que incluya 
especialistas de la región y de otras partes del mundo, preferiblemente 
de, al menos, tres países distintos.

El consejo científico del V CLAM decidirá sobre las propuestas que serán 
aceptadas de acuerdo con su nivel científico tratando de alcanzar un 
balance temático y una amplia representatividad geográfica.

El Comité Organizador del V CLAM, dependiendo de la disponibilidad de 
recursos, planea  financiar hasta 24 noches de hotel para cada sesión 
temática. La distribución de estas noches de hotel se hará teniendo en 
cuenta las necesidades y el lugar de origen de cada uno de sus 
participantes.

Esperamos tener sesiones en una diversidad de áreas que incluya las 
siguientes: Álgebra, Geometría Algebraica y Álgebra Conmutativa, 
Geometría y Topología, Análisis Funcional, Análisis Real y Armónico, 
Teoría de la Aproximación, Sistemas Dinámicos y Teoría Ergódica, 
Ecuaciones Diferenciales Parciales, Física Matemática, Probabilidades, 
Estadística, Teoría de Números, Combinatoria y Matemática Discreta, 
Análisis Numérico, Teoría de Control y Optimización, Lógica y 
Computabilidad, Enseñanza de las Matemáticas e Historia de las Matemáticas.

Las propuestas de sesiones especiales serán recibidas hasta el 15 de

PREMIO RECONOCIMIENTO UMALCA

  CONVOCATORIA

El premio de reconocimiento de UMALCA se otorgará en el marco del V 
Congreso Latino Americano de Matemáticos (V CLAM) a jóvenes matemáticos 
que hayan realizado trabajos de excepcional calidad y que se encuentren 
trabajando de manera permanente en un país de la región.

El consejo científico del V CLAM tendrá a su cargo la evaluación de los 
candidatos y la selección de los ganadores.

Se invita a las sociedades matemáticas, a las instituciones dedicadas a 
esta disciplina y a la comunidad matemática en general a proponer 
candidatos para este premio. No se aceptarán autonominaciones.

Cada postulación deberá incluir el /curriculum vitae/ del postulado y 
tres cartas de recomendación de expertos en el tema.

  El consejo científico del CLAM podrá solicitar la opinión de otros 
expertos en forma anónima si fuere necesario.

  En ocasión del V CLAM, que se realizará del 11 al 15 de julio de 2016, 
el premio se otorgará a hasta cuatro matemáticos que cuenten con no más 
de 45 años de edad al final de ese año. Las propuestas deben ser

CONFERENCIAS SEMIPLENARIAS Y CURSILLOS

El programa incluirá conferencistas invitados en 8 semiplenarias y en 4 
cursillos. Los nombres de los conferencistas serán anunciados pronto.

SESIÓN DE POSTERS

El V CLAM tendrá un espacio para la presentación de posters sobre 
resultados de investigación que hayan sido previamente publicados en 
revistas, proceedings o libros. El Comité Científico será el encargado 
de hacer una selección de las propuestas de posters que se hayan 
sometido para su evaluación. El sometimiento de las propuestas de 
posters se hará por medio de un aplicativo en línea en la página web del 
V CLAM. La información detallada sobre el proceso de sometimiento, 
revisión y respuesta de la sesión de posters se divulgará en su debido 
tiempo.
