CRM-Fields-PIMS Prize Lecture: Niky Kamran

Niky Kamran, McGill University, will deliver a talk entitled, "General Relativity, Differential Geometry and Differential Equations; Stories From a Successful Menage-a-trois." The lecture will take place on April 7, 2014 at the University of British Columbia.

Abstract:
It is well known that Einstein's general theory of relativity provides a geometrical description of gravity in terms of space-time curvature. Einstein's theory poses some fascinating and difficult mathematical challenges that have stimulated a great deal of research in geometry and partial differential equations. Important questions include the well-posedness of the evolution problem, the definition of mass and angular momentum, the formation of black holes, the cosmic censorship hypothesis, the linear and non-linear stability of black holes and boundary value problems at conformal infinity arising in the analysis of the AdS/CFT correspondence. Kamran will give a non-technical survey of some significant advances and open problems pertaining to a number of these questions.

This Prize recognizes exceptional achievement in the area of mathematical sciences and is considered Canada's top honour in mathematics.

Bio:
Prof Kamran is a James McGill Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at McGill University. He was the first recipient of the CRM's Andre Aisenstadt Prize in 1991 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2002. From 2006 to 2008, he held a Killam Research Fellowship awarded by the Canada Council for the Arts. His research interests are in differential geometry, partial differential equations and mathematical physics.
