Canadian high school team turns in world class performance

OTTAWA, Ontario – Six Canadian high school students are celebrating 
their 11th place success upon their return from the 54th International 
Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Santa Marta, Colombia. Each student 
earned a medal for Canada after competing against over 550 students at 
the world’s most challenging high school level mathematics competition.

Math Team Canada members received their medals at the IMO closing 
ceremony held on Saturday, July 27. Calvin Deng and Zhuo Qun (Alex) Song 
were both awarded gold medals, John (Zhiyao) Ma and Daniel Spivak were 
awarded silver medals and Alexander Whatley and Kevin Sun were awarded 
bronze medals.

As a result of the medals awarded to the team, Math Team Canada was 
ranked 11th in the world out of 97 participating countries. 
Additionally, Calvin Deng’s gold medal earned him a world ranking of 8th 
place and Zhuo Qun (Alex) Song’s medal earned him a 10th place world 
ranking.

“Canada has been participating at the IMO since 1981 and has 
consistently performed well on the international stage,” said Keith 
Taylor, President of the Canadian Mathematical Society. “The team’s 11th 
place ranking is an outstanding accomplishment for which the students 
and the Canadian mathematical community at large should be extremely proud.”

“These young people have indeed risen to the challenge, showing 
astounding mathematical skill and all winning medals,” said Robert 
Morewood, Deputy Leader of Math Team Canada 2013 and Chair of the CMS 
IMO Committee. “They have also represented Canada well to all the other 
youngsters here from around the world, making many connections, some of 
which may lead to life-long international friendships.”

L’équipe canadienne d’élèves du secondaire s’illustre sur la scène mondiale

OTTAWA (Ontario) – De retour de la 54e Olympiade internationale de 
mathématiques (OIM) de Santa Marta, en Colombie, six élèves d’écoles 
secondaires canadiennes célèbrent leur 11e place. Chacun a remporté une 
médaille pour le Canada après s’être mesuré à 550 élèves dans le cadre 
du concours de mathématiques le plus difficile du monde pour les élèves 
de niveau secondaire.

Les membres de l’Équipe mathématiques du Canada ont reçu leur médaille à 
la cérémonie de clôture de l’OIM tenue le samedi 27 juillet. Calvin Deng 
et Zhuo Qun (Alex) Song ont chacun remporté une médaille d’or, John 
(Zhiyao) Ma et Daniel Spivak, une médaille d’argent, et Alexander 
Whatley et Kevin Sun, une médaille de bronze.

Cette récolte de médailles place l’Équipe mathématiques du Canada au 11e 
rang mondial sur un total de 97 pays participants. De plus, les 
médaillés d’or Calvin Deng et Zhuo Qun (Alex) Song ont obtenu 
respectivement la 8e et la 10e place au classement mondial.

mathématique du Canada. L’obtention de la 11e place est un exploit 
remarquable dont les élèves et l’ensemble de la communauté mathématique 
canadienne doivent être extrêmement fiers. »

mathématique formidable et ont tous remporté une médaille, souligne 
Robert Morewood, chef adjoint de l’Équipe mathématiques du Canada 2013 
et président du Comité de l’OIM de la SMC. Ils ont aussi fait bonne 
figure pour le Canada devant les autres jeunes venus de partout dans le 
monde, créant des liens qui, pour certains, déboucheront peut-être sur 
des amitiés internationales durables. »
