Le Prix de mathématiques André-Aisenstadt 2013 attribué à Spyros Alexakis

Montréal, le 14 novembre 2012 - Le comité scientifique international du Centre de recherches mathématiques a le plaisir d'annoncer que Spyros Alexakis de l'Université de Toronto est le lauréat du Prix André-Aisenstadt 2013.

M. Alexakis a obtenu un baccalauréat en mathématiques de l'Université d'Athènes  en 1999 et un doctorat de l'Université de Princeton en 2005 sous la supervision de Charles Fefferman. Il a reçu une bourse de recherche Clay ainsi que une bourse Sloan.  Il s'est joint au département de mathématiques de l'Université de Toronto en 2008. Ses travaux sont en analyse et en physique mathématique. Seul ou avec des collaborateurs, il a obtenu des résultats frappants dans au moins trois directions différentes. Sa contribution la plus importante est d'avoir résolu une conjecture de Deser et Schwimmer concernant la structure des invariants conformes globaux. Ce travail est paru sous la forme d'une monographie de recherche dans la prestigieuse collection Annals of Mathematics Studies de l'Université de Princeton. Avec Klainerman et Ionescu, il a contribué d'une façon fondamentale à l'étude des propriétés des solutions de Kerr des équations de Einstein. Finalement, avec Mazzeo, il a obtenu des résultats profonds concernant les surfaces minimales avec une énergie de Wilmore bornée.

Créé en 1991, le Prix de mathématiques André-Aisenstadt souligne l'excellence de la recherche en mathématiques pures ou appliquées effectuée par de jeunes mathématiciens canadiens. Il comprend une bourse ainsi qu'une médaille.

The 2013 André-Aisenstadt Mathematics Prize awarded to Spyros Alexakis

Montréal, November 14, 2012 - The International Scientific Advisory Committee of the Centre de recherches mathématiques is happy to announce that Spyros Alexakis from the University of Toronto is the 2013 André-Aisenstadt Prize recipient.
Dr. Alexakis obtained a bachelor in arts degree from the University of Athens in 1999 and a Ph.D. from Princeton University in 2005 under the supervision of Charles Fefferman.  He held a Clay Research Fellowship as well as a Sloan Fellowship. He joined the Mathematics Department of the University of Toronto in 2008. He works in analysis and  mathematical physics. Alone and with collaborators he obtained striking results in at least three different directions. His main contribution is a solution to a conjecture of Deser and Schwimmer regarding the structure of global conformal invariants. This work was published as a research monograph in the prestigious  Annals of Mathematics Studies of Princeton University.  Secondly, together with Klainerman and Ionescu, he made important progress in the understanding of the Kerr solutions to Einstein's equations. Finally, jointly with Mazzeo, he obtained deep results concerning minimal surfaces with bounded Wilmore energy.  

Created in 1991, the André Aisenstadt Mathematics Prize celebratee outstanding research achievement by a young Canadian mathematicians  in pure or applied mathematics. The Prize consists of a monetary prize and a medal.
