*OTTAWA, Ontario* – Six Canadian high school students are celebrating
their success as they return home from the 53rd International
Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Each of the six
students earned a medal for Canada after competing against over 500
students at the world’s most challenging high school level mathematics
competition.

The students received their medals at the IMO closing ceremonies on
Sunday, July 15. Gold medals were awarded to Calvin Deng (Cary, NC
resident), Alex Song (Waterloo), and Matthew Brennan (Toronto). James
Rickards (Ottawa) was awarded a silver medal and Daniel Spivak (Toronto)
and Kevin Zhou (Toronto) were awarded bronze medals.

The team’s success ranks Canada as 5th in the world out of 100 competing
countries.

“Math Team Canada’s fifth place ranking is the best standing Canada has
received since we began participating at the IMO in 1981,” said Keith
Taylor, President of the Canadian Mathematical Society. “I am extremely
proud of our team for the long hours of studying and the dedication that
earned them this extraordinary standing.”

“The contest was extremely challenging this year and the fact that we
managed to do so well is a true testament to the students’ hard work and
talent, and an absolutely remarkable achievement,” said Jacob Tsimerman,
Leader of Math Team Canada 2012.

*OTTAWA, Ontario* –Six étudiants canadiens du secondaire célèbrent leur
réussite en rentrant au pays, après avoir participé à la 53e Olympiade
internationale de mathématiques (OIM) à Mar del Plata, en Argentine.
Chacun des six étudiants a remporté une médaille pour le Canada après
avoir affronté plus de 500 étudiants dans le cadre du concours de
mathématiques pour étudiants du secondaire le plus exigeant au monde.
Les étudiants ont reçu leur médaille au cours des cérémonies de clôture
de l’OIM le dimanche 15 juillet. Des médailles d’or ont été remises à
Calvin Deng (résident de Cary, en Caroline du Nord), à Alex Song
(Waterloo) et à Matthew Brennan (Toronto). James Rickards (Ottawa) a
reçu une médaille d’argent et Daniel Spivak (Toronto) et Kevin Zhou
(Toronto) une médaille de bronze.

Grâce au succès de l’équipe, le Canada se classe au 5e rang dans le
monde parmi les 100 pays participants.

« Cette cinquième place pour l’Équipe mathématiques du Canada est la
meilleure position jamais obtenue pour le Canada depuis que nous avons
commencé à participer à l’OIM en 1981, a indiqué Keith Taylor, président
de la Société mathématique du Canada. Je suis extrêmement fier de notre
équipe compte tenu des longues heures que les membres ont consacrées à
étudier et pour leur dévouement, qui leur a permis d’obtenir ce
classement extraordinaire. »

« Le concours était extrêmement difficile cette année, et que nous ayons
si bien réussi est indicateur du travail ardu et du talent des
étudiants. Il s’agit d’une formidable réussite », de dire Jacob
Tsimerman, chef de l’Équipe mathématiques du Canada 2012.
