Edward Susko Receives the 2011 CRM-SSC Prize

Montreal, May 10, 2011  - Edward Andrew Susko, Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Dalhousie University, is the 2011 winner of the CRM-SSC Prize.  Ed has been at the forefront of the development of probabilistic and statistical methods across the field of genetics and computational biology, and is recognized as an international leader. Alongside work published in the mainstream statistics literature, his papers have appeared in some of the most influential journals in the field (PNAS, Molecular Biology and Evolution, Journal of Theoretical Biology). His important contributions, highly cited and recognized as foundational by world-leading experts, include work on statistical phylogenetics, comparative genomics and molecular evolution. His recent results concerning the application of the bootstrap to phylogenetics, where it is perhaps the most widely used computational tool, and the development of theoretical results related to likelihood estimation, have been described as having the potential to completely change the way that molecular phylogenetics is practiced and interpreted worldwide.

A native of the Windsor area in Ontario, Ed earned a B.A. in mathematics from University of Windsor in 1990. He then moved to University of British Columbia where he earned a M.Sc. in statistics in 1992. His Ph.D. in statistics was completed in 1996 at University of Waterloo. His Ph.D. thesis won the Pierre Robillard Award of the SSC in 1996. Ed has continually produced research work of the highest quality. In 2001 he received the Canadian Journal of Statistics (CJS) Best Paper Award from the SSC. More recently, Ed was Fellow of the CIAR Program in Evolutionary Biology (2005-2007).

Ed credits much of his success to fruitful and enjoyable collaborations with Andrew Roger and other members of the vibrant evolutionary bioinformatics community at Dalhousie. A caring family and a number of thoughtful SSC members played important roles in formative years. He and his wife, Tammy, enjoy reading, walks, kayaking and an occasional game of golf. They live in Bedford, Nova Scotia with their two children, Mark and Melissa, who enjoy camping, cross-country, swimming, The Amazing Race and Mabinogi, not necessarily in that order.

Edward Susko is the thirteenth recipient of the CRM-SSC Prize. Previous winners of the award were Christian Genest (Laval), Robert J. Tibshirani (Stanford), Colleen D. Cutler (Waterloo), Larry A. Wasserman (Carnegie-Mellon), Charmaine B. Dean (Simon Fraser), Randy R. Sitter (Simon Fraser), Jiahua Chen (Waterloo), Jeffrey S. Rosenthal (Toronto), Richard J. Cook (Waterloo), Paul Gustafson (UBC), Hugh A. Chipman (Acadia), and Grace Y. Yi (University of Waterloo).

Ed will deliver the CRM-SSC Prize in Statistics Address at the 39th Annual Meeting of the Statistical Society of Canada to be held in Wolfville, NS, June 12 to 15.

Montreal, le 10 mai 2011 -  Edward Andrew Susko, professeur au Département de mathématiques et de statistique de l’Université Dalhousie, est le récipiendaire 2011 du prix CRM-SSC. Ed est à l’avant-garde du développement de méthodes probabilistes et statistiques en génétique et biologie computationnelle et il est reconnu comme un leader international. En plus de publication dans les principales revues statistiques, ses articles ont aussi paru dans d’autres revues spécialisées influentes (PNAS, Molecular Biology and Evolution, Journal of Theoretical Biology). Ses importantes contributions, très citées et reconnues comme fondatrices par divers experts mondiaux, incluent des travaux sur la phylogénétique statistique, la génomique comparative et l’évolution moléculaire. Ses récents résultats, concernant l’application de la méthode bootstrap à la phylogénétique, où elle est devenue l’outil computationnel sans doute le plus utilisé et le développement de résultats théoriques liés à l’estimation de la vraisemblance, ont été décrits comme ayant le potentiel de transformer la pratique et l’interprétation de la phylogénétique moléculaire à l’échelle mondiale.

Originaire de la région de Windsor en Ontario, Ed a obtenu un baccalauréat en mathématiques de l’Université de Windsor en 1990. Il a ensuite rejoint l’Université de la  Colombie-Britannique, y obtenant une maîtrise en statistique en 1992. Son doctorat en statistique, décerné en 1996 par l’Université de Windsor, lui a valu le prix Pierre-Robillard de la SSC cette même année. Ed a toujours produit des travaux de recherche de la plus haute qualité. En 2001, il s’est vu décerner le prix du meilleur article de la Revue canadienne de statistique par la SSC. Plus récemment, Ed a été boursier du programme Biologie évolutive de l’ICRA (2005-2007).

Ed attribue son succès en grande partie à ses collaborations fructueuses et agréables avec Andrew Roger et d’autres membres de la vibrante communauté de la bioinformatique évolutionnaire à Dalhousie. Une famille bienveillante et plusieurs membres prévenants de la SSC ont joué des rôles importants dans ses années formatrices. Ed et sa femme, Tammy, aiment lire, marcher, faire du kayak et jouer au golf. Ils vivent à Bedford, en Nouvelle-Écosse, avec leurs deux enfants, Mark et Melissa, qui aiment camper, le cross-country, la natation, Le Rallye autour du monde et Mabinogi, mais pas nécessairement dans cet ordre.

Edward Susko est le treizième récipiendaire du prix CRM-SSC. Les lauréats précédents sont : Christian Genest (Laval), Robert J. Tibshirani (Stanford), Colleen D. Cutler (Waterloo), Larry A.
