Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the Board of MITACS, I am writing to you on an issue of strategic importance. Over the past year the MITACS Board has been considering the best organizational structure to account for the phenomenal growth of the organization. Specifically, MITACS has evolved to include two substantive mandates, one centered around the original NCE and the other around creating knowledge capacity for Canada. The question before the Board was what structure would be optimal to helping ensure both mandates.

On December 3rd, the Board determined that it would be in the best interests of MITACS to restructure into two organizations:
-          Mprime Network Inc. to focus on the original NCE mandate of addressing Canadian socio-economic imperatives through advanced mathematical sciences research and
-          Mitacs Inc. to focus on ensuring a critical mass of human capital for Canada's knowledge economy

Towards this, the Board has asked for a special meeting of MITACS members to vote on this restructuring; this meeting is expected in early February.

Note that the current MITACS Inc. programs that are focused on the mathematical sciences (NCE projects, mathematical summer schools, etc.) will now fall under the purview of Mprime Network Inc., while the multi-disciplinary training programs (Accelerate, Step, Globalink, Elevate, etc.) under Mitacs Inc. Note that from a functional point of view, if MITACS is restructured in the proposed manner, all terms and conditions around the existing research grants, training programs, and networking initiatives will continue as before and we will strive to ensure that the scientific community  does not experience any disruptions.

Au nom du conseil d'administration de MITACS, j'aimerais vous faire part  d'une question d'importance stratégique.



Au cours de cette dernière année, le conseil d'administration de MITACS a examiné la meilleure structure organisationnelle possible pour tenir compte de la croissance phénoménale de l'organisme. Plus précisément MITACS, a évolué en développant deux mandats de fond, l'un axé sur le RCE original et l'autre axé sur la création de la capacité du savoir du Canada. La question se posant à la Commission était de savoir quelle structure serait optimale pour aider à assurer les deux mandats à la fois.



Le 3 décembre, le Conseil d'administration a déterminé qu'il serait dans le meilleur intérêt de MITACS de se restructurer en deux organismes :



-          Réseau Mprime Inc (pour focaliser sur le mandat original du RCE d'aborder les impératifs socio-économiques canadiens au travers de la recherche avancée en sciences mathématiques)



-           Mitacs Inc. (dont le mandat est s'assurer de la garantie d'une masse critique de capital humain pour le Canada pour l'économie du savoir du Canada )



Dans ce sens, le conseil a convoqué une assemblée extraordinaire des membres de MITACS pour voter cette restructuration, cette assemblée est prévue début février.



Veuillez noter que les programmes actuels de MITACS Inc. axés sur les sciences mathématiques (Projets RCE,  classe d'été de mathématiques) relèveront de la compétence de Réseau Mprime Inc., tandis que les programmes pluridisciplinaires (Accélération, Step, Globalink, Elévation, etc.) relèveront de la compétence de Mitacs Inc.



Veuillez noter que d'un point de vue fonctionnel, si MITACS est restructuré dans le sens proposé, tous les termes et conditions contenus dans les subventions de recherche existantes, les programmes de formation, et les initiatives de réseautage continueront comme auparavant et nous nous efforcerons de veiller à ce qu'aucune perturbation ne vienne troubler la communauté scientifique.
