The Canadian Mathematical Society is pleased to announce that Professor
Walter Whiteley of York University is the recipient of the 2009 Adrien
Pouliot Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to mathematics
education. Professor Whiteley will receive the award at the Society’s 2009
Winter Meeting in Windsor, Ontario. 


The Adrien Pouliot Award was inaugurated in 1995 by the CMS to recognize
individuals or teams of individuals who have made significant and sustained
contributions to mathematics education in Canada.  The award is named after
the second President of the CMS, an eminent mathematician and educator.


In announcing the award, Tony Lau, President of the CMS, noted that
“Professor Whiteley is an acknowledged expert and innovator in the field of
mathematics education and this award recognizes not only his commitment to
and passion for mathematics education but the excellence of his contribution
as well.”  

 

“Professor Whiteley has made an outstanding contribution to the teaching and
learning of mathematics in Quebec and Ontario and on the national and
international stage” noted Dr. Peter Taylor, Chair of the CMS Education
Committee. ”His work has influenced teachers and students throughout our
education system and his dedication to advancing mathematics, mathematics
education, and, more recently, education policy at the national and
provincial levels, makes him an ideal recipient of the 2009 Adrien Pouliot
Award.”

 

Professor Whiteley is one of a handful of Canadian mathematicians whose work
is grounded in the mathematics education literature and who is a contributor
to international math education studies.  The award also acknowledges his
leadership and influence in the development of mathematics education.  At
the centre of his work, both in mathematics research and in education, is
geometry, whether it be the rigidity of buildings or the flexibility of
proteins, and his passion for this wonderful and tragically neglected
subject gives focus and energy to his work.

La Société mathématique du Canada (SMC) est fière d’annoncer que le
professeur Walter Whiteley de l’Université York est le lauréat 2009 du prix
Adrien-Pouliot pour sa contribution exceptionnelle à l’éducation
mathématique. Le professeur Whiteley recevra son prix à la Réunion d’hiver
2009 de la SMC, qui se tiendra à Windsor, en Ontario.


Inauguré en 1995, le prix Adrien-Pouliot rend hommage aux personnes ou aux
groupes qui ont fait une contribution importante et soutenue à l’éducation
mathématique au Canada. Ce prix porte le nom du deuxième président de la
SMC, qui était un éminent mathématicien et éducateur.


Dans son annonce, le président de la SMC, Tony Lau, a souligné que « le
professeur Whiteley était un spécialiste reconnu et un innovateur dans le
domaine de l’éducation mathématique, et que ce prix récompensait non
seulement son dévouement et sa passion pour l’enseignement des
mathématiques, mais aussi l’excellence de sa contribution au domaine. »

 

« La contribution du professeur Whiteley à l’éducation mathématique au
Québec, en Ontario et sur la scène nationale et internationale est
exceptionnelle » souligne Peter Taylor, président du Comité d’éducation de
la SMC. « Son travail a influencé des enseignants, des étudiants et des
élèves de tous les niveaux, et son dévouement pour l’avancement des
mathématiques, l’éducation mathématique et, plus récemment, pour les
politiques éducatives au niveau national et provincial, font de lui le
lauréat idéal du prix Adrien-Pouliot 2009. »

 

Le professeur Whiteley est l’un des rares mathématiciens canadiens qui porte
ses intérêts de recherche sur l’enseignement des mathématiques et qui
contribue à des études internationales dans ce domaine. Ce prix souligne
également son rôle de chef de file et son influence dans le domaine. Tant en
recherche qu’en éducation, ses travaux portent essentiellement sur la
géométrie, qu’il s’agisse de la solidité des bâtiments ou de la souplesse
des protéines. Sa passion pour ce sujet merveilleux et malheureusement
négligé guide tous ses travaux et leur insuffle une énergie nouvelle.
