Limited Term Position in Mathematics
Lakehead University (Orillia Campus)

Lakehead University’s Orillia Campus invites applications for a 9
month limited term appointment in Mathematical Sciences commencing on
September 1, 2009 at a rank commensurate with experience and
qualifications. Preferred candidates will have an earned PhD (or
equivalent), a demonstrated potential for research, and a commitment
to teaching.

The campus offers an interdisciplinary, inquiry-based, Honours
Bachelor of Arts and Science. We are looking for faculty who are
interested in contributing to the development of this
interdisciplinary program.

Teaching responsibilities will include 2.5 FCEs among the following

Mathematics 0140 - Topics in Mathematics (1 FCE)
Topics covered in this course include: numeracy and number sense,
measurement, geometry and spatial reasoning, patterning, algebra,
probability, and data management. Special attention is given to the
development of a conceptual understanding of mathematics, as well as
the appropriate use of manipulatives and concrete materials.

Mathematics 1160 - Calculus for Social and Life Sciences (1 FCE)
Functions, the derivative, logarithmic and exponential functions, the
graphs of functions, applications of the derivative, integration,
applications of integration, and infinite series.

Mathematics 2111- Differential Equations (.5 FCE)
Solutions of first order differential equations; applications.
Solutions of second order linear differential equations with constant
coefficients. Methods of finding particular solutions. Solutions of
second order linear differential equations with variable coefficients.
Applications.

Mathematics 2131- Vector Calculus (.5 FCE)
Coordinate systems and vectors; parametric curves and surfaces;
partial differentiation; multiple integration; vector fields; and
vector calculus including Green's theorem, Stokes' theorem, and the
divergence theorem.

Inquiry 1010 - Foundations of Inquiry (.5 FCE)
Students will study the strategies used in various disciplines of
science, social science, arts, and humanities to identify and analyze
problems. Exploring selected topics from diverse disciplinary
perspectives, they will formulate questions, gather and interpret
evidence, and reach well-considered conclusions.

Inquiry 1030 - Applications of Inquiry (.5 FCE)
Building upon Inquiry 1010, students will apply multidisciplinary
strategies to address, in a collaborative setting, complex problems in
selected areas of science, social science, arts, and humanities.
