[cmath] Prix CRM-SSC 2009/ CRM-SSC 2009 Prize

Le Centre de recherches mathématiques et la Société Statistique du  
Canada sont fiers de décerner le Prix CRM-SSC 2009 à Hugh Chipman du  
Département de Mathématiques et de Statistique de l’Université Acadia  
à Wolfville en Nouvelle Écosse. Monsieur Chipman a fait des  
contributions exceptionnelles à l’application de l’inférence  
statistique bayésienne en analyse des données. Ses travaux sur la  
sélection bayésienne de variables en planification d’expériences, sur  
le paradigme bayésien pour la régression non paramétrique par  
ondelettes, et sur une approche bayésienne pour la modélisation CART  
(arbre de classification et de régression) sont fondamentaux. Ses  
articles sont largement cités et ont un impact significatif sur le  
développement de l’analyse non paramétrique de données utilisant  
massivement l’ordinateur. En 2006, ses travaux ont été choisis pour  
une présentation orale complète à la réunion annuelle du NIPS, le  
Neural Information and Processing Systems.

Ce prix vise à souligner l’excellence, au plan de la recherche en  
sciences statistiques, d’un scientifique dont les travaux de  
recherche ont été effectués avant tout au Canada. Pour être  
admissible au Prix CRM-SSC, un/une candidat/candidate doit avoir  
obtenu son doctorat (ou un diplôme équivalent) depuis au plus 15 ans.

Le Comité du Prix 2009 CRM-SSC a été présidé par Louis-Paul Rivest  
(Université Laval). Les autres membres étaient Richard J. Cook  
(University of Waterloo), Sorana Froda (Université du Québec à  
Montréal), Paul Gustafson (UBC) et Bruce Smith (Dalhousie

The Centre de recherches mathématiques and the Statistical Society of  
Canada are pleased to award the 2009 CRM-SSC Prize to Professor Hugh  
Chipman, Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Acadia  
University, Wolfville, NS. Professor Chipman has made outstanding  
contributions to the application of Bayesian statistical inference  
for data analysis. His work on Bayesian variable selection in  
experimental design, on a Bayesian paradigm for nonparametric wavelet  
regression, and on a Bayesian approach to CART (Classification and  
Regression Tree) modeling is seminal. His papers are widely cited and  
have a profound impact on the development of computer intensive  
nonparametric data analysis. In 2006 his work was selected for a full  
oral presentation at the Neural Information and Processing Systems  
(NIPS) meeting.

The award is designed to recognize the excellence in research of a  
statistical scientist whose work was carried out primarily in Canada.  
Eligibility is limited to Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents  
of Canada. To be eligible for the CRM-SSC Prize, a candidate must  
have earned her/his Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) within the last 15  
years of receiving the award.

The 2009 CRM-SSC Prize Committee was chaired by Louis-Paul Rivest  
(Université Laval) and had Richard J. Cook (University of Waterloo),  
Sorana Froda (Université du Québec à Montréal), Paul Gustafson (UBC)  
and Bruce Smith (Dalhousie University) as members. For more details,
