Prix ACP-CRM de physique théorique et mathématique

Appel de candidature 2007

En 1995, à  l'occasion du cinquantenaire de l'Association canadienne  
des physiciens et physiciennes (ACP), le Centre de recherches  
mathématiques (CRM) et l'Association canadienne des physiciens et  
physiciennes (ACP) ont créé un prix conjoint visant à souligner des  
réalisations exceptionnelles en physique théorique et mathématique.

L'Association canadienne des physiciens et physiciennes, fondée en  
1945, est une association professionnelle qui représente plus de 1600  
physiciens et étudiants en physique au Canada, aux États-Unis et  
outre-mer ainsi qu'un certain nombre de sociétés et établissements  
membres. Outre ses activités spécialisées, l'ACP en exerce d'autres  
qui visent à inciter les étudiants à faire carrière en physique.

Le CRM est un centre national de recherches en sciences mathématiques  
financé, entre autres, par le CRSNG, le FQRNT, l'Université de  
Montréal où il est situé, et les universités McGill, UQÀM, Concordia,  
Laval, Ottawa et Sherbrooke. Les activités de recherche du CRM  
comprennent l'organisation de semestres thématiques, d'écoles d'été,  
d'ateliers et de séminaires, ainsi que la publication de  
monographies, d'actes de conférences et de notes de cours en sciences  
mathématiques et en physique.  Le CRM supporte également la recherche  
via ses laboratoires de recherche incluant celui en physique  
mathématique.

Le prix ACP-CRM vise à souligner l'excellence dans le domaine de la  
recherche en physique théorique et mathématique. Les candidats  
admissibles ne doivent pas nécessairement être membres de l'ACP, mais  
leurs travaux de recherche doivent avoir été réalisés au Canada, ou  
dans le cadre d'une affiliation avec une université ou une entreprise  
canadienne. Ce prix a été décerné pour la première fois en 1995 lors  
du congrès annuel de l'ACP. Les récipiendaires du prix, depuis sa  
création, ont été Werner Israel (Alberta), William G. Unruh (UBC),  
Ian Affleck (UBC), J. Richard Bond (Toronto), David J. Rowe  
(Toronto), Gordon W. Semenoff (UBC), André-Marie Tremblay  
(Sherbrooke), Pavel Winternitz (Montréal), Matthew W. Choptuik (UBC),  
Jiri Patera (Montréal), Robert C. Myers (Waterloo/Perimeter  
Institute), et John Harnad (Concordia).

Un comité d'attribution mis sur pied par le CRM et la division de  
physique théorique de l'ACP sélectionnera le récipiendaire du prix  
sur la foi de contributions remarquables à l'avancement des  
connaissances dans le domaine.  Le critère de sélection principal est  
l'excellence de la recherche.

Les candidats doivent avoir réalisé leurs travaux de recherche  
essentiellement au Canada ou dans le cadre d'une affiliation avec une  
université ou une entreprise canadienne. Les nominations sont valides  
pour trois (3) ans.

Les mises en candidature doivent avoir été reçues au plus tard le 10  
janvier 2007, être soumises par au moins un présentateur, et inclure  
les renseignements suivants:

•            Une lettre justificative du présentateur

•            Le curriculum vitae du candidat

•            La liste des publications du candidat

•            Trois lettres de référence

• 	      Un texte de 300 mots au maximum pouvant être reproduit si le  
candidat est choisi

Au maximum un seul Prix ACP-CRM sera décerné à chaque année.  Le  
récipiendaire sera invité à prononcer une conférence lors du congrès  
annuel de l'ACP.  Une médaille commémorative et un montant de 2 000 $  
lui seront remis dans le cadre du banquet de ce congrès.

CAP-CRM Prize in Theoretical and Mathematical Physics

2007 Call for Nominations

The Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM) and the Canadian  
Association of Physicists (CAP) created in 1995 on the occasion of  
the 50th anniversary of the CAP, a joint prize in recognition of  
exceptional achievements in theoretical and mathematical physics.

The Canadian Association of Physicists, founded in 1945, is a  
professional association representing over 1600 individual physicists  
and physics students in Canada, the U.S. and overseas, as well as a  
number of Corporate and Institutional Members. In addition to its  
learned activities, the CAP also undertakes a number of activities  
intended to encourage students to pursue a career in physics.

The CRM is a national research centre in mathematics jointly  
supported by NSERC, FQRNT, the Université de Montréal where it is  
based, and the following universities: McGill, UQÀM, Concordia,  
Laval, Ottawa, Sherbrooke. Among the activities of the CRM are  
thematic semesters, summer schools, workshops, seminars, and the  
publication of monographs, proceedings, and lecture notes in  
mathematics and physics. CRM also supports research through research  
laboratories, including one in mathematical physics.

The object of this award is to recognize research excellence in the  
fields of theoretical and mathematical physics. The award is not  
limited to CAP members but the candidates' research should have been  
done in Canada or in affiliation with a Canadian university or  
industry. This medal was awarded for the first time at the 1995 CAP  
Annual Congress. Recipients of the prize since its creation have been  
Werner Israel (Alberta), William G. Unruh (UBC), Ian Affleck (UBC),  
J. Richard Bond (Toronto), David J. Rowe (Toronto), Gordon W.  
Semenoff (UBC), André-Marie Tremblay (Sherbrooke), Pavel Winternitz

C. Myers (Waterloo/Perimeter Institute), and John Harnad (Concordia).

A selection committee established by the CAP Division of Theoretical  
Physics and the CRM will choose the recipient of this prize on the  
basis of outstanding contributions to the advancement of the field.   
The main selection criterion is research excellence.

The candidate's research should have been done primarily in Canada or  
in affiliation with a Canadian university or industry. Nominations  
are valid for three (3) years.

Nominations must be submitted by January 10, 2007, by at least one  
sponsor and should include the following information:

•            Covering letter from the sponsor explaining the basis of  
the nomination

•            Curriculum vitae

•            List of publications

•            Three supporting letters

•            Maximum 300 word citation suitable for publication if  
nominee is chosen as award recipient

There will be at most one prize awarded per year at the annual  
congress of the Canadian Association of Physicists.  The recipient  
will be invited to give a lecture at the CAP annual congress. A  
commemorative medal and $2,000 will be given to the recipient at the  
banquet of this meeting.
