LE PRIX CRM-FIELDS 2004 EST OCTROYE A DONALD DAWSON

Janvier 2004. - Le directeur du Centre de recherches mathématiques(CRM) de
l'Université de Montréal, M. Christian Léger et le directeur du Fields
Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences, M. Kenneth R. Davidson,
sont fiers d'annoncer que le prix CRM-Fields 2004 est octroyé au Pr Donald
Dawson pour sa remarquable contribution à l'avancement et l'excellence de sa
recherche en probabilité.

Ce prix a été créé par les deux centres en 1994 afin de souligner
l'excellence du travail en sciences mathématiques. Le récipiendaire est
choisi par un comité de sélection formé à partir du Comité consultatif du
CRM et du Comité aviseur scientifique du Fields Institute.

Le récipiendaire de cette année Donald Dawson est l'un des plus grands
probabilistes qui soit. Il a été à l'origine de plusieurs contributions
majeures dans l'étude de processus stochastiques distribués dans l'espace et
de systèmes de branchement de dimension infinie, notamment les
super-processus de Dawson-Watanabe. Il a reçu son baccalauréat en 1958 de
l'Université McGill et son doctorat en 1963 du MIT. 

Pr Dawson a enseigné à l'Université McGill ainsi qu'à l'Université Carleton
où il est maintenant Professeur émérite. Il a fait preuve de leadership au
sein de la communauté mathématique canadienne en agissant, entre autres,
comme Directeur du Fields Institute pour un mandat de 1996 à l'an 2000. Il
est Membre de la Société royale du Canada, ainsi que Fellow de
l'International Statistical Institute et de l'Institute of Mathematical
Statistics. 

Il a également reçu d'autres honneurs, dont la Médaille d'or de la Société
statistique du Canada en 1991, a été conférencier Jeffery-Williams de la SMC
en 1994, a donné une conférence invitée au Congrès international de
mathématiques en 1994, ainsi que la Conférence de prestige en sciences
statistiques du Fields Institute. Ses nombreux états de service en matière
d'édition incluent le poste de co-rédacteur-en-chef du Journal canadien de
mathématiques. Il a également participé à de nombreux comités du CRSNG et de
la SMC et il est présentement Président désigné de la Bernoulli Society for
Mathematical Statistics and Probability.

Les Professeurs H.S.M. (Donald) Coxeter, George A. Elliot, James Arthur,
Robert V. Moody, Stephen A. Cook, Israel Michael Sigal, William T. Tutte,
John B. Friedlander, John McKay et Edwin Perkins ont été les récipiendaires
précédents du Prix CRM-Fields.

THE 2004 CRM-FIELDS PRIZE AWARDED TO DONALD DAWSON

January 2004. - The directors of the Centre de recherches mathématiques
(CRM) of l'Université de Montréal, Christian Léger, and the Fields Institute
for Research in Mathematical Sciences, Kenneth R. Davidson, are pleased to
announce that the CRM-Fields Prize for 2004 is awarded to Professor Donald
Dawson in recognition of his exceptional achievement and work in
probability.

The Centre de recherches mathématiques and The Fields Institute established
the CRM-Fields prize in 1994 to recognize exceptional work in the
mathematical sciences. The recipient is chosen by a selection committee made
up of members of the Advisory Committee of the CRM and the Scientific
Advisory Panel of the Fields Institute.

Donald Dawson, this year's recipient, is one of the world's leading
probabilists, having made seminal contributions to the study of spatially
distributed stochastic processes and infinite-dimensional branching systems,
among those being the Dawson-Watanabe superprocess. He received his B.Sc.
from McGill in 1958 and his doctorate from MIT in 1963. 

Professor Dawson taught at both McGill University and Carleton University,
where he is now Professor Emeritus. His leadership within the Canadian
mathematical community includes a term as Director of the Fields Institute
from 1996 to 2000. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, as well as
of the International Statistical Institute and the Institute of Mathematical
Statistics. 

Other honours include 1991 Gold Medal Lecture of the Statistical Society of
Canada, the 1994 Jeffery-Williams lecture of the CMS, an invited lecture at
the 1994 ICM, as well as the Fields Institute's Distinguished Lecture Series
in the Statistical Sciences. His numerous editorial contributions include
serving as co-editor-in-chief of the Canadian Journal of Mathematics. He has
served his profession through numerous NSERC and CMS committees, and is
currently President-Elect of the Bernoulli Society for Mathematical
Statistics and Probability.

Previous recipients are H.S.M. (Donald) Coxeter, George A. Elliot, James
Arthur, Robert V. Moody, Stephen A. Cook, Israel Michael Sigal, William T.
Tutte, John B. Friedlander, John McKay and Edwin Perkins.
