Dear colleagues,

You will recently have received the call for nominations for the 2004 CMS
Doctoral Prize, with its deadline of January 31, 2004. We append a copy of the
call for nominations for your convenience. You may also wish to check the web
page http://www.cms.math.ca/Prizes/info/dp.html for further details and a list
of past recipients.

The number of nominations in recent years has not reflected the strength and
number of new PhDs in mathematics in Canada. This is in contrast to awards to
faculty (Jeffery-Williams, Coxeter-James, Krieger-Nelson), where ongoing faculty
renewal and initiatives such as the CRC program have led to an impressive pool
of nominations of outstanding researchers.

We are confident that your department is rightly proud of its PhD program and of
the students that are successful in it. We suggest that any PhD-granting
mathematics department in Canada should make it a habit to nominate annually its
strongest, most original, or most accomplished new PhD for this award.

As the nominee will have to participate in the nomination by providing a CV and
a resume of the thesis, the simple fact that you have nominated her or him will
be a significant recognition on your part of the student's accomplishments.

Receiving the prize will not only recognize the excellence of the candidate and
boost his or her career, it will also provide a useful recruiting tool for your
program and a source of pride for your institution.

Please forward this message, as appropriate, to your Graduate Chair or Graduate
Committee for further consideration and active involvement.

Subject: Call for Nomination 2004 CMS Doctoral Prize

The CMS Doctoral Prize recognizes outstanding performance by a
doctoral student. The prize is awarded to the person who received a
Ph.D. from a Canadian university in the preceding year (January 1st to
December 31st) and whose overall performance in graduate school is
judged to be the most outstanding. Although the dissertation will be
the most important criterion (the impact of the results, the
creativity of the work, the quality of exposition, etc.) it will not
be the only one. Other publications, activities in support of students
and other accomplishments will also be considered.

Nominations that were not successful in the first competition, will be
kept active for a further year (with no possibility of updating the
file) and will be considered by the Doctoral Prize Selection Committee
in the following year's competition.

The CMS Doctoral Prize will consist of an award of $500, a two-year
complimentary membership in the CMS, a framed Doctoral Prize
certificate and a stipend for travel expenses to attend the CMS
meeting to receive the award and present a plenary lecture.
